Climate Bill to Drop Next Week: Our Generation Must Respond!

Written by Kalen Pruss, Policy Director for Show Me Democracy

The climate bill slated to drop next week is far from perfect, but time is running out and we need legislation. We have to pass a climate bill in order for the US to bring anything concrete and meaningful to the international negotiations. Even a bill resulting from compromises will be incredibly difficult to pass in the Senate. Yet if we don’t act to pass clean energy and climate legislation this spring, we will lose our opportunity to do so for several years. As we all know, the world cannot afford to wait: the U.S. Senate must enact a bill that makes real and aggressive steps to address climate this term.

Now is the moment—the last moment, the critical moment—to make sure that our voices are heard. Big Oil and Dirty Coal already have a death grip on Washington. If we fail to stand up and tell our elective representatives that we want a clean energy future, corporate polluters will weaken the energy and climate bill even further.

Senators Kerry (D-MA), Graham (R-SC), and Lieberman (I-CT) plan to release their climate and energy bill next Monday. Oil and coal interests have long been planning their response; as young people and constituents, it is our responsibility to respond to the bill as well. In the coming weeks, it is critical that all of us organize our friends and fellow activists and tell our Senators to strengthen comprehensive climate and energy legislation. When the bill is released next week, we must work together to ensure that it:

  • Regulates carbon emissions from manufacturing before 2016
  • Addresses global warming with a sound carbon pricing and reduction mechanism
  • Preserves the Clean Air Act authority to regulate dangerous pollution
  • Maintains state authority to regulate emissions – their innovation helps to craft effective policy across the country
  • Strengthens clean energy standards to spur clean energy innovation and jobs here in America

Students at the University of Oregon want a strong climate bill now! Support on campus for passing climate legislation that would cap carbon and help to create a clean energy economy has been growing throughout the school year.  In November, we organized the regional Powershift West conference, drawing over 500 young leaders to the University of Oregon campus; in December, a delegation of UO students went to the International Climate Negotiations in Copenhagen.  And now, despite the lack of true results from COP-15, student leaders are more determined than ever to pass a strong climate bill in the US before it’s too late, and we are ready to show our community what democracy really is.

On February 18th, students from the UO’s newly founded Climate Justice League and I rode our bikes to the courthouse for the first of many lobby days as part of the national Show Me Democracy Campaign.  At the heart of this campaign to develop broad-based support for a strong climate bill is community outreach.  From day one, students in our group have been working to build coalitions with members of the wider community, ranging from business leaders, to farmers, to faith-based groups.  The goal is for representatives from each of these groups to eventually join us in lobbying our senators.

Step up for Democracy this week!

Our generation is already implementing clean energy solutions in our communities, but we know that we must communicate our successes and our vision to our political representatives in order for them to translate into a strong climate bill.  Unfortunately, our chances of passing a progressive climate bill are being blocked in the Senate and are weakened every day; Big Oil and Big Coal are salivating with the taste of success.  It is time for us to stand up and make our voices heard!

This week, Show Me Democracy organizers are hosting Senate Field Office visits in local offices across nine states.  Please join us this week by showing up at your nearest Senate Field Office and demanding a climate bill that will propel America towards a clean energy future.  Visit www.ShowMeDemocracy.com now for more information as well as resources, support and to connect with other activists in your area!

Together we can pass a climate bill that will…

Moey Newbold is a Vassar College student currently spending her junior year at the University of Oregon in her beloved home state of Oregon. She attended Powershift 2007 as a freshman and fell in love with the youth climate movement, and has since attended Powershift 2009 and helped organize Powershift West '09. In 2008, she was an Oxfam CHANGE Leader with Oxfam America's national student leadership program, which spurred her to organize a national lobby day in Washington, D.C. to advocate for climate policy that includes adaptation funding for the world's most vulnerable people. After going to Copenhagen for the COP15 International Summit on climate change in December, 2009, Moey and a few other students from across the country started Show Me Democracy (www.showmedemocracy.com), a campaign to pass a progressive climate bill in 2010 by mobilizing and empowering our generation to pressure US Senators in their home states. Moey enjoys laughing loudly and always living life to its fullest.
