School District Moratorium on “An Inconvenient Truth”

Federal Way School District in Washington state has placed a moratorium on An Inconvenient Truth, requiring teachers who show the film in their class to provide a “credible, legitimate opposing view” to the scientific evidence regarding global warming.

“Laurie David, a co-producer of the movie, said that this is the first incident of its kind relating to the film.” reported the Seattle PI.

If anyone has any credible, legitimate, and opposing evidence to the science regarding global warming, please, by all means, don’t just share it with Federal Way School District. Last I checked there is increasingly overwhleming scientific concensus that global warming is happening and it is primarily caused by human’s addiction to fossil fuels.

Luckily, since this is the only case where the film’s facts have been questioned by a school district, over 500 schools and colleges will be holding FREE screenings of the film between January 27 and February 2, 2007. To see if your school’s signed up or to plan a screening, check out the Rising to the Challenge Week of Action.

Washington State Voters say YES to Clean Energy

My home state is the 2nd state in the country where citizens have voted yes for clean energy! Initiative Measure 937 requires the state’s investor-owned utilities to integrate 15% new renewable energy sources into their electricity supply by 2020. Check out the U.S. DOE EERE’s story. The first state to bring this issue to the voters was Colorado in 2004, where voters say yes to 10% renewable resources by 2015.
With Washington now on board, 21 states and the District of Columbia have adopted renewable portfolio standards. What’s unique about Washington and Colorado is that these commitments have come from the ground up. - citizens letting their leaders know that they want their homes and businesses powered by renewable energy.

Campus Climate Challenge Launches Today!

It’s so simple – ask students if converting their school’s electricity to wind power is worth $1, $8, even $25 to them and overwhelmingly, over and over again, students will say “Totally;” “Obviously,” Why aren’t we already doing that?”

The Campus Climate Challenge launches today! At 11:30 last night, Arthur Coulston and I watched the Challenge campus counter hit 300 as University of Nevada - Las Vegas registered their campaign. 300 campuses all committed converting their campuses to clean energy! The youth in the U.S. and Canada are demanding that we convert to clean energy now and demonstrating that we can do it today.

Through the Challenge, youth are uniting to create a massive clean energy movement. In three years, we will have collectively amplified our voices so loud that the U.S. and Canadian governments, industry, and citizens’ ears will all be ringing. And our campuses’ investments in clean electricity and transportation will be a major catalyst to the exponential growth of the renewable energy and clean car markets. Join us.
