Small Canadian Town Fights Coal Plant

British Columbia currently has no coal plants! woohoo. Unfortunately our consumption of electricity is rising and all our major rivers have been already damned. For the past few years we’ve been importing electricity from Alberta – the electricity was derived from burning coal.

In order to be more energy self-reliant Premier Gordon Campbell is planning to build the provinces first coal plant in Princeton, a small town in the Okanagan region of British Columbia. Chief Joe Dennis of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band and other citizens groups oppose the Coal plant because of the health effects associated with coal plants. Hear their story!

I just left a message on Gordon Campbells phone - (250) 387-1715. You can give him a call yourself, even if you’re not from B.C. Or drop him an email (premier@gov.bc.ca) telling him to stop picking on small towns and indigenous peoples! This is the perfect opportinity to put more clean energy on the grid.

Il fait beau dans l’métro (et l’autobus)

Il fait beau dans l’métro or “the weater is nice in the tube/metro/subway” was produced by BCP, Québec’s first French advertising agency, to encourage public transit. I can’t wait for Vancouver to get a metro so I can dance all over it with my friends in 70’s clothing and sing this song.

Alberta Tar Sands Discussion

This 11 min clip is classic Canadianna! David Suzuki interviews Preston Manning, former leader of the Reform Party of Canada.

Suzuki manages to create an open, tolerant, respectful, and safe space that is inclusive of Preston Mannings conservative, market based paradigm. I think that this safe space is the key to constructive dialogues that will eventually solve our sustainability problems.

(The clip starts to get more interesting around 7min.)
