Hang Ten! Tidal Power (Webisode 207) from Center for Innovative Media on Vimeo.
Are you ready to ride the waves?
I recently talked with Craig Collar of the Snohomish County PUD in Washington State about their plans to install Tidal Energy Turbines. By connecting two tidal turbines – think underwater windmills – to the grid, Craig is investigating the potential of tidal power. Currently, there are only 40 sites on the planet that meet the right conditions to even generate tidal energy. Watch the webisode and then weigh in…do you think tidal power will sink or swim as a viable alternative energy option?

I don’t think tidal power will ever be much of a player. If you take a look at the potential for tidal energy for Britain, for example, you find that it has a respectable potential, but that realising it is still a long way off. I don’t see how we can do that in the time we have available.
Has anyone done an analysis similar to David MacKay’s to examine the potential for tidal energy in the US, looking at raw energy available, regardless of technology? I’d like to read it if they have.
Energy efficiency is becoming an increasingly important issue worldwide. Renewable energy solutions, such as solar cells, wind power, and fuel cells are good alternatives over traditional energy sources to further this cause.
