Fools! Where do you think all the power will now be generated from? Yes – gas and coal. Hugely filthy and dirty compared to nuclear. Also, do you know how much raw material and energy will be required to replace VY’s 620,000,000 watts generated annually? Holy shit! Down here in New Haven we have a windmill located next to the Quinnipiac River that puts out 100,000 watts maximum (when the wind is blowing hard). It cost $500,000 and was largely subsidized (paid for!) by the taxpayers. It provides one business (The Phoenix Press) with enough electricity to offset only 1/3 of its electricity bill. Big fucking deal! You’d need 6,200 of these units, all working at maximum capacity 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to equal the amount of power produced by Vermont Yankee. I could go on, but the absurdity of VY’s closing will hit you hard after 2012. Hoo Boy – are you going to get killed by high electrical rates! Lots of luck. Your state will now experience increased pollution from higher carbon releases, higher electrical charges due to imported power from Canada, horrible landscape destruction for the property required to erect the structures necessary to generate the wind/solar power, etc. You guys just fucked yourselves; what a short-sighted decision you tofu-vegan fools have made. You were suckered into believing renewable energy is a viable replacement for nuclear. Keep dreaming, and good luck with the reality of your decision. Better fire up the wood stove and burn down the forests while hugely polluting the air. Peace/Love/Dope! Now where’s my hemp hat?…

Well said, Jack! Rod Adams over at Atomic Insights provides a good perspective on how much tritium has leaked from Vermont Yankee. As he points out, if one person consumed all that leaked tritium, they would likely suffer no adverse effects.

So you want to put 600 people out of work, destroy a town, get rid of 85% of your states power (which is CO2 free already!), raise utility bills for everyone in the state, and lose millions in tax revenue (that usually pays for your schools and highways) for what?

So called “dangerous” nuclear power in the US has killed…drumroll…0 people in 50 years of operation! You’re going to replace that with volatile natural gas that kills thousands a year from explosions…way to go.

Ben – this is awesome. As Craig said, Go Vermont!

However, it could be far awesomer IF you guys challenged someone – the VT state government, maybe – to see who could “replace” the VY plant sooner. You’d work with students, community groups, and local leaders to replace the power produced by VY via efficiency gains, and they’d work to build renewable energy sources – wind, solar, etc. Whoever adds more electricity – be it megawatts or negawatts – to the grid faster wins.

This would be a true “race to replace” VY.

In any case, this looks like a great event to build community support for clean electricity – so go get ‘em.

Mark, are you implying the nuclear industry is subsidised? Do you mean the loan guarantees? These are not subsidies, despite many claims to the contrary. If the plant gets built and operates, the government doesn't pay a cent. They only pay if they, the government, decide to change the rules and make it impossible for the plant to be constructed. It works just like student loans, making it possible for constructors to get access to cheap credit. This means the plant, when operational, will be able to charge less for electricity, because there is less debt to pay off. So, by not spending a cent in the first place, the government save the consumer money in the long run. There is such a lot of misleading information out there, some sources find it necessary to lie about guarantees to scare people. Don't let them fool you!
