Step up for Democracy this week!

Our generation is already implementing clean energy solutions in our communities, but we know that we must communicate our successes and our vision to our political representatives in order for them to translate into a strong climate bill.  Unfortunately, our chances of passing a progressive climate bill are being blocked in the Senate and are weakened every day; Big Oil and Big Coal are salivating with the taste of success.  It is time for us to stand up and make our voices heard!

This week, Show Me Democracy organizers are hosting Senate Field Office visits in local offices across nine states.  Please join us this week by showing up at your nearest Senate Field Office and demanding a climate bill that will propel America towards a clean energy future.  Visit www.ShowMeDemocracy.com now for more information as well as resources, support and to connect with other activists in your area!

Together we can pass a climate bill that will…

Reduce Carbon Emissions Immediately:

• MEET STRONG SHORT TERM TARGETS: Reduce U.S. carbon emissions 25-40% by 2020 to protect our communities in a changing climate.

• CAP CARBON: Auction 100% of allowances, and use 100% of the revenue to further reduce emissions and help American taxpayers.

• CUT GLOBAL WARMING POLLUTION: Place a moratorium on dirty-energy development to ensure a cleaner future and encourage smart long-term investments.

Build a Clean Energy Economy:

• INVEST IN GREEN JOBS: Reinvent and reinvigorate our economy with a massive investment in renewable energy infrastructure and R&D.

• SUPPORT WORKERS: Create a fair transition to a low-carbon economy with job training and assistance programs.

• PROTECT OUR FUTURE: Ensure that the next generation grows up in a healthy economy powered by good paying, clean-energy jobs.

Demonstrate Global Leadership:

• LEAD THE WORLD: We can’t do this alone—making immediate, binding commitments at home will convince other nations to do the same.

• CREATE GLOBAL SECURITY: Provide adaptation assistance to vulnerable communities, states, and nations.

• PASS A STRONG CLIMATE BILL THIS SPRING!

Stooped by Max Baucus, (D-MT) today and dropped off a letter for him asking him to get with the picture on climate. The Senate as a whole needs to get moving and I’m stoked you all are on it.

About Moey

Moey Newbold is a Vassar College student currently spending her junior year at the University of Oregon in her beloved home state of Oregon. She attended Powershift 2007 as a freshman and fell in love with the youth climate movement, and has since attended Powershift 2009 and helped organize Powershift West '09. In 2008, she was an Oxfam CHANGE Leader with Oxfam America's national student leadership program, which spurred her to organize a national lobby day in Washington, D.C. to advocate for climate policy that includes adaptation funding for the world's most vulnerable people. After going to Copenhagen for the COP15 International Summit on climate change in December, 2009, Moey and a few other students from across the country started Show Me Democracy (www.showmedemocracy.com), a campaign to pass a progressive climate bill in 2010 by mobilizing and empowering our generation to pressure US Senators in their home states. Moey enjoys laughing loudly and always living life to its fullest.
