1:54 More to come – don’t think that this is the end of us.  Over 150 people watching live stream.  Thousands of people know what’s going on. Thanks everyone for joining us, please continue to leave comments below.  Gotta run before I get swept away!

1:51 Security ready to crack down. Jeh is giving an impromptu speech, paraphrasing “we have been told by the Secretariat that if we risk arrest, we could jeopardize the ability for ALL of civil society to be involved in coming days.  We have come to consensus, despite reservation, that we will take our concerns outside and take it to the streets.  We are calling for mass civil disobedience, and solidarity actions around the country.  Join us.”  Applause!!!

1:44 Spoke too soon.  Security showed up, appointed person liaising with them.

1:43 No signs of security yet.  Live Web Stream is going strong and being are contacting us from all over the world.  This is truly incredible.  Thank you for all of the support.

1:33 Members of civil society being run out of different corners of the Bella Center – security is definitely making a sweep.  Sitters are clear they aren’t trying to make trouble for security, just trying to make sure their future is secured.

1:25 Security circling corridors.  Team has sat back down and is waiting to see what happens… Reading of names picks up again, still bringing the voices of 11 million people into the Bella Center.

1:12 Team meeting to figure out plan for night.  Things are getting quiet around here, but your comments and tweets are keeping it energetic!

12:56 We have a Live Stream set-up now. Hear from the folks sitting-in themsleves: http://www.powershift09.org/live

12:30 Solidarity sit-ins called for.

12:00 We made it to midnight! As the conference center begins to empty out and janitors start tidying up the space, we’re joined by an unexpected guest – a little snowman from the storm that’s hit Copenhagen this evening. We’re also proud to announce that since we’ve officially hit Thursday morning, some of the young people here have begun their day of fasting in solidarity with the Climate Justice Fast. Interested in helping out the effort and joining the likes of Cate Blanchett, Vandana Shiva, and Mary Robinson? Fast in solidarity with those sitting in the center and calling for climate justice all around the world!

11:45 Maryam puts up an incredible personal post about her experience.

11:09 Wow! Your comments of support are incredible and we just blew past 114 of them. It couldn’t be better timing: one of the big plenary debates just let out and delegates are coming out into the hallways. They’ll be seeing the sit in and hearing your comments that we’ll be passing on to them. Please, keep the comments coming and spread this thread to your friends. Know that you have a voice inside these negotiations and help make our collective demand for action even louder.

10:38 Thanks to the support of all of you online, this action is now resonating louder and louder here at the UN Climate Talks and beyond. But we still need your support. As you can see from the video of the incredible Dessima Williams below, the youth at the sit-in are talking with delegates from around the world as they pass by the demonstration. We want to be able to tell these negotiators — many of whom are now coming under immense pressure from rich countries to back down and compromise their very survival — that the world supports them. We know that 19 people at a sit-in isn’t enough — we need your voice too. Can you add your message of support to this post and push it past 100 comments? We’ll repeat those messages to our heroes as they walk by, and remind the countries blocking progress that the world is watching!

10:15 During the sit-in we spotted one of our climate heroes here in Copenhagen, Dessima Williams, chairwoman of the AOSIS (small island state negotiating block).  We asked her for her reactions on the sit-in, and told us an incredible story!  14 years ago she sat in at this SAME center for 8 days to urge military funding move towards women focused development.  A true hero, and the struggle goes on, check it out:

10:03 About 20 yards from the sit-in, fossil fuel hack is interviewed by Fox news – people riled up by sit-in respond with “boos” and laughter.  He’s laughed off the camera.

9:40 Photos of the sit-in are now flying around the world on the news wires:

Also, please keep the comments coming. As the hours drag on it becomes more difficult for the youth here to hold their position at this crucial time and we need your support. Even now, at nearly 10 pm negotiations are continuing here in Copenhagen and will go late into the evening. Pressure is building by the hour on poor countries to back off their call for strong action and we’ve heard from many delegates that it’s our voices — your voices — that make the difference.

9:26 Sit-in still going strong.  Lots of interviews still happening.

Here is some video from the visit with John Kerry:

8:53 Photo up on the AP!

8:15 Messages of support flow in from people around the world on Twitter and on the blog:

Bruno Sarda: Pls tell them how much we appreciate their courage and determination on behalf of the entire world, incl those beating up on them!

Nemo: Youth are the gatekeepers of humanity’s future. Help us,  Generation 350, you’re our only hope.

Liz McDowell: GO GO GO!!!! We’re with you!

Pier LaFarge: You represent the voices of so many. Thank you for your courage and endurance. In solidarity, and hope.

Xhemai Mato (Albanian Leader of the Environmental NGO Coalition, the Eco Movement) in-person: “They don’t like this kinda protest, we need this push, all people need this push.”

8:05 Thank you all so much for your messages of support. We showed them to all the youth still sitting in here in the Bella Center and to many big shouts of  “Thank you!” and “That’s awesome! Tell them to join us!” Keep the comments coming and spread this post around so that more people can show their support for the action.

7:54 As Canadians continue sit-in in Copenhagen, they are joined by a citizen occupations of Canadian Prime Minister’s Harpers office.

7:36  Senator John Kerry just walked by the sit-in, shook the hands of each of the 19 people, and told them “Thank you for your commitment.”  I hope Senator Kerry can convince President Obama to show the same sort of leadership when he arrives on Friday.

7:30  We’ve confirmed that the one person taken away by security has been released, glad he is safe.  Oh, and it turns out that they turned off the lights for Earth Hour, thanks WWF!

7:23 This update comes in the form of quotes from people sitting-in:

“We want a fair, ambitious and legally binding deal.  I’m prepared to not leave until we get this” – Ann, China

“We’ve been dragged to the side just like developing countries, that’s why we tried to stay in a circle, so that the voices of these 11 million people can’t be pushed aside.” – Maryam, Canada

“The voices of these 11 million people can’t be ignored, we won’t allow it” – Dominek, Germany

7:04 All the lights in the corridor turn off, they are trying to get civil society to leave.

6:56 Rumor is that they might be kicking out all of civil society at 7 PM (4 minutes from now).  We’ll see what happens.

6:49 The sit-in continues, almost going for 2 hours straight.  More great video below.  We have an incredible team of documentarians here.  Big ups to Rachel Barge for filming, Ellie Johnston for cutting the clips, and to my co-blogger Jamie Henn.

6:33 Medium risk-team has dispersed, but 17 people still reading names.  Doesn’t the UN realize that with fewer people it’s going to take a lot more time to read through the 11 million names that are calling for a fair, ambitious and binding treaty?

6:24 Here’s video of security dragging youth away from the sit-in less than 15 minutes ago:

6:21 Everyone remaining is reading names from the side of walkway, security seems okay with this for now.

6:19 People still reading names. Several taken into custody.

6:15  There are at least 15 cameras filming people and reading names.  The world will hear the truth from the voices of young people.

6:12  Thanks for all the comments.  I’ll relay to the brave ones sitting that they have your support.

6:11 Still about 19 people reading names – super inspirational.  Video coming…. Trying to figure what happened to the two people who were dragged away

6:07 Many people just dragged away.  There is a bit of pandemonium and everyone is spread out.  Chants of “the Whole World is Watching” coming from throughout the halls.

6:02 I just ran around the circle – this is truly global! There are people from Canada, Wales, Turkey, France, U.S., Denmark, Australia, Germany, China, Lebanon, England, Ireland, Kenya, Norway.  Young people around the world are invested in each other’s futures and are not about to give up.

Read on for more photos and updates.

5:57 Circle turns in-ward to huddle and decide what to do.  With very little hesitation, they turn back and stay strong.  Applause from on-lookers.

5:51 After 51 minutes, security finally moves in, asks them to sit on side.  Young people refuse to leave, holding strong.  U.S. Special Envoy on Climate Change, the U.S.’s chief negotiator just walked by and definitely noticed.

5:45  Press release added at the bottom.  Numbers keep building, seems like this might last for awhile!

5:34 More people join the sit-in as media continues to interview youth from around the world calling for a real deal here in Copenhagen. I’m hearing names being read from Nigeria, Jordan, the US, Canada, Australia. The world is clearly ready for action — when the people lead, it’s time for the leaders to follow.

5:18 Sit-in holding strong.  Media swirling and no sign of security.  Looks like they are choosing to ignore this for now.  Something tells me that these people wont allow themselves to be ignored.

5:01 I’m at the heart of the Bella Center, where youth activists from around the world have set-up a sit in.  They are reading aloud the names of the 15 million people who have called for a fair and ambitious treaty, and are refusing to leave until there voices are heard and demands are met.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Canadians and International Youth Sit-In at Bella Centre in Copenhagen to Raise Expectations for Outcome

December 16, 2009

Copenhagen, Denmark – At 5:00pm today, during the opening of the high level segment of this year’s international climate change negotiations, a group of approximately 30 international youth staged a sit-in, refusing to leave the talks until a fair, ambitious, and legally binding treaty was reached. The group included young people from both developed and developing nations, including 10 Canadians.

The young people gathered and initiated the sit-in at the main hall of the conference centre where more than 110 heads of government are expected in coming days. They immediately began to read the names of the more than 11 million people who signed a petition demanding the same fair, ambitious, and legally binding agreement that is needed to avoid dangerous climate change and usher in a global clean energy economy.

“Canada, along with many other rich nations, has played an obstructive role here in Copenhagen. Despite this, Presidents and Prime Ministers still have a chance to make the necessary commitments to keeping global warming as far below a 2 degree increase as possible in a legally binding, ambitious, and equitable way,” said action participant Alex Doukas from Calgary, Alberta. “Canadians are disappointed that our minority government has failed to play a constructive role in these negotiations that determine our future, and they have failed to represent the vast majority of Canadians who want stronger action on climate change.”

Canada has truly lagged in recent weeks. Leaked documents have revealed that the federal government had no intention of meeting its already inadequate emissions reduction target. They have pledged zero additional financing to help those nations who are already facing the impacts of climate change, focusing instead on investing in unconventional oil development in the tar sands. As the only party that will not meet its Kyoto Protocol commitments, and the developed country with the second worst climate commitment as ranked by Germanwatch in their Climate Change Performance Index, much is needed from Canada in coming days. “Reports suggest the minority government had secret plans to further weaken our already unacceptable climate plan in favour of handouts for the oil and gas industry. The Harper government continues to embarrass Canada on the international stage. Prime Minister Harper needs to lead at this summit, and if he doesn’t, Canadians need to hold his government accountable,” said Doukas.

The Canadian youth maintain that recent events have not lowered their own ambition. “Canada can still raise their targets; targeted assessments have shown that world-class, science-based targets will have a marginal impact on economic growth, and a positive impact on job creation in a clean energy economy. Canada can still pledge additional, sustainable, and predictable climate finance, in accordance with ‘common but differentiated responsibilities’ and historical responsibility. Above all, Canada can be a leader on climate change; the defining issue of our time,” emphasized Joanna MacDonald, a youth from Guelph, Ontario.

Glad that this is happening. It goes very well with the outside actions today demanding that this process needs to change and as you can tell from the progress so far at these negotiations there is a lot of needed change.

We need to ensure that the delegates here in Copenhagen know that the deal they’ve got isn’t fair, ambitious, binding and they need to hear the NAMES of the 11.6 million people that they are letting down.

Thanks for standing with us all around the world!

  15. 15 David Gibson Dec 16th, 2009 at 1:58 pm

“This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. spread the word around

  28. 28 joshlynch Dec 16th, 2009 at 2:58 pm

Incredible to hear Senator Kerry thanked you. Everyone should know that last night the US held up the COP15 talks for 10 hours, demanding major changes to long term cooperation text. Yesterday U.S. negotiator Jonathan Pershing told me that that long-term climate finance for developing countries was off the table for the US. Our leaders must do more to meet the expectations of the world for survival and a real climate deal now. Keep standing strong everyone! We are with you.

  29. 29 Danny Dec 16th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

I applaud their bravery, their commitment and their passion. Don’t give up! THE WORLD IS WATCHING and we support you!

  45. 45 Tim Dec 16th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Thank you all for your courage and commitment! You are spear-heading and giving voice to the will of many millions of people all over this world … including the life-forms/eco-systems we share our collective home with. There is no other option but to end up with a “fair, ambitious, and binding deal” now. All of creation supports your action. We must come together as a world community to successfully change our ways. Your actions right now are inspiring. You definitely have the right to take these actions as you well know … regardless of the minority who have been dragging their feet on this most fundamental and critically important issue. Hold firm. Hearts all over the world are yelling support and ‘thank you’s’.

You all give me hope that something will come out of these two weeks of talk. Seeing the youth standing strong together says they will not stop until true change comes. I look forward to the rest of the week and pray for courage to take the real steps to the way we humans live together on this precious planet.

You’re all very brave for taking action and standing up to the plate; it’s much harder than sitting here and typing on my computer. I do wish I was there, though. Picked up this post from Facebook, so “the world is watching” isn’t just an empty catchphrase. Don’t give up!

In solidarity with you all back in the States. Thanks for being more committed to the urgency of the climate crisis and survival of all people than certain decision-makers seem to be. Watching you all from afar, I trust our generation’s future is in the bravest of hands. In 2050, I’ll be 65 and I know I’ll be looking back with pride at what you all helped us achieve with your actions today and every other day.

I am so grateful to you all. I want to let you know that I am finishing up a presentation for the Environmental Working Group of the Massachusetts Council of Churches. Tonight at 7:30pm (Boston), faith leaders already committed to 350 and a fair, ambitious, and legally binding treaty will renew their commitments to this work and chart the next steps for our work here. photos and video of your sit-in, as well as text from your live blog will help to strengthen us. I hope that knowing that we are not resting, but working, here can bring you some comfort– and that we will pray for you (giving thanks for your courage and strength and praying that you be kept safe as you bear witness to the world). Groups across Massachusetts are working together to push President Obama and Senator Kerry to come home with a real deal, but we also will not wait for them to lead. Be strong, and know that our hearts and hands are with you tonight. In Massachusetts, as in Copenhagen and across the planet, we are led by young people. Thank you for standing up to the powers that would seal our destruction by sitting down.

  70. 70 James Lloyd Dec 16th, 2009 at 5:13 pm

You guys are legends, having been at the G20 and seen how protesters were treated, today brings back really bad memories, unfortunately this is the future in a climate changing world, today is politically enlightened people campaigning for justice. Can you imagine when protests are about the issues of the future if our leaders fail like food, fuel or climatic refugees. Power and state are very strong and anyone who challenges this orthodoxy will get this treatment seen today outside the Bella Centre your resistance if an awakening to the world. I am convinced after today that the NGOs and civil society within the conference and the protesters outside are all that stands in the way of the arm twisting tomorrow and a really bad deal that will not offer justice or stop climate change, and further more we will never be able to unpick it. You are at the frontline of stopping climate change and no deal has to be better than a bad deal!

Be bold stay strong your are the future and make your voices heard.

The world is watching and you are making a difference

Send my love to the UKYCC Emma, Kirsty, Casper and all the others

    Friends,

I am feeling very emotional today and when I read this post, tears ran down my cheeks. I am so very grateful that you are there, doing the frontline work that needs to be done. And I’m happy to hear of the counter sit-in at my Prime Minister’s Office. I’m not exactly sure what we did to deserve him and his ilk and I apologize for him and his ilk.

Please continue to demand and fair, ambitious and legally binding document. Certainly, that is the document my friends and family and networks want to see!

To the over 100 countries that are supporting the call for a real deal to get us to 350 — know that you are the majority of the world. You may not be the biggest or the richest countries, or have the biggest armies, but know that you have a movement at your backs. You’re not just negotiating for your survival, but for all our survival.

As President Nasheed of the Maldives has said, “If we cannot save the Maldives today, we won’t save Mumbai or New York City tomorrow.”

We need you and will do all that we can to help. Stay strong, stay focused, and let’s fight until the very end.

  114. 114 Gunnar Cedersund Dec 16th, 2009 at 6:12 pm

    To the passing by politicians:

This might be the most important 24 hours of one of the most important meetings in the history of our world. You are representing the expectations of the whole world…this is to let you know that the whole world is indeed watching very closely what you are doing. In fact, all generations to come are watching, and you are negotiating for them as well. Please do whatever you can, and then stretch even further!! We need to do what has never been done before! Nevertheless, the task is not impossible, and if everybody does what is within their reach, we will get there!

    With hope, Gunnar

  115. 115 Maggie Dec 16th, 2009 at 6:14 pm

We’re calling Harper in support of you RIGHT NOW! Youth across Canada and around the world are in solidarity with you all, making our voices–your voices–heard on our campuses, in our workplaces, to our families, to our friends, to our elected representatives, to our business leaders, and to our media.

  117. 117 Marisol Becerra Dec 16th, 2009 at 6:22 pm

Dear friends, I am curently writing a blog post and just called back home to Chicago and told everyone what the power of youth can do and is doing right now!

Unfortunately, I was not allowed access to Bella despite the fact that I have a secondary badge with me. However, I am there with you in spirit. Your action has reached the hearts of many across Copenhagen and across the world. Thank you for doing what you are doing, for being persistent, for never giving up, for standing up for each and every of the 12 million people that you call out every second. Even though you do not know all of them personally, the fact that we are all in solidarity and care for each other is what makes us so strong.

Keep doing it for your people
    for your country
    for your friends
    for Tuvalu
    for the Maldives
    for Africa
    for the ice caps
    for the polar bears
    for mother earth
    for the forest
    for your family
    for your future
    for your children
    for your grand children
    for indigenous rights
for all those who experience environmental injustice
for those living near coal power plants
for those who are sick due to dirty polluters
for the 49 premature deaths that occur in my community
for the real deal that we need!

    We shall overcome!

Thank you from Cornwall, UK on behalf of my 21 month old boy Jago who is sleeping upstairs while I read about you. I am so glad that you are there making a stand on behalf of all of us – working to change the world and my son’s life for the better. I hope he grows up to be as passionate, caring and powerful – in a world where we care about each other and our shared future. Keep the faith.

  127. 127 David Sandelin Dec 16th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

And also, a song for you, if you want to sing some. You may have seen it on the mail (no need to accept this into the commentary entries)

Can you feel the heat tonight
    the global warming comes
it won’t end until everyone is dead
    but we’ll fight until then

    there’s a calm surrender
    to the end of cop
when the heat of the wishing crowd
    can’t be made to stop

    the speakers and the writers
    the blocking annex 1
they get their act together finally
they do what must be done

and can you feel the love tonight
    it is where we are
it’s enough to make rich and poor alike
    believe the very best

  128. 128 Kristy Wilcox Dec 16th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

  131. 131 Ben Wikler Dec 16th, 2009 at 6:35 pm

There are tears in the eyes of the Avaaz team as we refresh this page over and over and over–the name readers are bringing the world’s voices to the place where the world’s fate is on the line. You’re spectacular. Please, please keep telling the delegates to stand strong–to bring home a treaty we can believe in. The world is on your side.

  132. 132 Holly Jones Dec 16th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

I wish i could be there to support you all in person but couldn’t get into the Bella Center. Whit and all who are participating you are an amazing inspiration to us all. 136. 136 George Papakyriacou Dec 16th, 2009 at 6:45 pm

This is the time to save the Human Race. The Earth will eventually balance itself out. But in the balancing process we are going to be squeezed out of it. And it will be OUR fault…

  137. 137 Eric Farrow Dec 16th, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Commitment. The youth are most certainly committed to our future because it is ours to inherit. I sincerely hope that the message of the demonstration resonates beyond Sen Kerry and the US leaders, but to all of the world.

Great work–keep it up. People around the world are with you.
Remember that the people you’re trying to influence are much more scared of you and your potential impact than you have reason to be of them (or their security forces).
However long you hold out, it is a success.

The spirit of this movement will forever change the way leaders behave at international conferences.
It will expose the wanton bias and moral ineptness of these selfish puppets purpoting to be LEADERS of
    their people.

Thanks my Brave and Committed friends, the world really will be a different place because of your actions.

    ALUTA to the struggle…

we need you – and your actions.
I’m very happy to see that there are people – everywhere you go and look – that have their ways and methods to show their opinion, to raise their voice.

For civil society it is great and very important to see you there and stand strong. Pressure on the UN is high and you are a big part of it.

    Good luck to you,
we help the best we can.

Our Living Planet Earth is hoding her breath. She has spoken for eons to us mankind. She has done it by pouring sweet-scented breezes, melodious bird’s songs, precious animal shapes and skin colors, gorgeous sunsets, astounding sunrises, beautiful, perfect storms, glorious colorful fishes, extraordinary flowers, cristal clear soft waters, enchanting forest creeks and springs, and food, lots of food,, generously abundant food for allof us.

    And how have we responded?

We have poured back in return millions of tons of toxic waste, poisonous fumes, pestilent waters, terrible noises. We have slaughtered millions of species of fish, mammals, birds. We have devastated entire countries, with it’s animals and trees. We have murdered millions of fellow human beings for endless decades, we have destroyed dreams, lives, hopes and expectations for our own greed.

And now, when we have a chance to stop part of it our Living Planet Earth is hoding her breath because our own greed stops us from seeing a future projected farther than next saturday. We fail to realiza that our children and their children and their children will have to cope with the crumbs we are leaving on the table.

Wake up and do something. Else you will have to weep blood, sweat, and tears of grief and regret when the time is done.

  165. 165 June Blotnick Dec 16th, 2009 at 7:55 pm

  171. 171 nickengelfried Dec 16th, 2009 at 8:06 pm

You all are so amazing! This morning I was trying to think what it would take to really get the attention of global decision makers and force them to act on the greatest planetary crisis since the nuclear stand-offs of last century. I found myself thinking about the women’s suffragette movement in the early twentieth century, and the National Women’s Party picket outside of the White House. I began thinking that is the scale of action we need in the climate movement – then I turned on my computer this afternoon and read about the Copenhagen youth delegation doing something very similar! You all give me hope – and I’m sure that many, many other people around the world who can’t be in Copenhagen this month feel the same way.

  172. 172 Florian Dec 16th, 2009 at 8:09 pm

Perfect timing, guys, keep the pressure up. Earlier on the day you started the sit-in, the Reclaim Power march united people outside with people inside the Bella Center and now you have taken the initiative. Thank you so much. Let’s show everyone that we are ready for a FAB deal!

  173. 173 Ana Dec 16th, 2009 at 8:10 pm

Sooo excited to see this. So many parts of the movement coming together – our connection to 11 million petition signers, the connection to champions like John Kerry, the international make-up of the people sitting in, the live-feed of streaming awesomeness.

This is how we build and win a movement. Maybe not tonight, maybe not tomorrow or Friday, but this is what puts us on track to win.

No matter where you are now, your effort has gone around the world. As longs as there are people like you, fighting for what they believe in, I refuse to give up hope. We still have a long way to go, and no one knows if we’ll make it in the end, but they can’t force us to turn back. There is no time for pessimism. Thank you from all my heart for giving a face to 11 million who signed and an example for what it means to be a citizen of this earth to many more.

  202. 202 Elena Dec 16th, 2009 at 10:15 pm

Thank you all so much for your commitment and courage, and for standing (or sitting) strong for all the people who couldn’t be there! It’s the action of youth at places like COP15 that keep inspiring and reinvigorating me. I’ve included a piece of a poem I wrote about activism–I hope it helps give you some added energy to know that it is people like you that were the basis for this poem.
Keep going strong! I’m behind you all the way!

It’s time to wake up because real life starts right now, not in some distant future,
There is no easy time, stable time, right time,
We act and speak out of necessity and urgency.
We act to be alive, to live out passions.
Now is always the moment to claim your presence and take a hold of your future.
So refuse those reused sanguine solution.
Grasp a wisp of a paradigm shift and hold on for dear life.
Find a voice for the voiceless and do not let our language languish.
Change the script we are handed and instead, we must speak up, out, around
Let our words shine out like stars.
Let your voice, our voices, fight and push back against the darkness,
    the weight of the problems
    media misconstructions
and the inaction of our leaders.
I refuse to not be optimistic in the face of the darkness.
Because I wake up in a strong amazing body with a voice that can sing, laugh, communicate.
Because I am not by myself.
I have hands that reach out person by person, soul by soul.
Because I have hands, all your hands, that reach out to me and lift me up.

There are voices singing in the darkness
and we are finding melodies that connect the dots and form a chorus.
A song that embraces basic humanity, embraces the seeming contradictions
that those who fear our power try to use to tear us down.
A song that changes the way we fuel our bodies, movements, machines, minds, and souls.
A song that reaches out and rejuvenates. That is building, swelling, growing.

And I wake up in this body and I cry,
because the power of that song has so much potential for beauty.
And that song—so full of light—it’s already on the wind.
The whispers are coming in from around the globe.
    And I am humbled, we should be humbled, the world should be humbled;
Because no one, and no thing,
has the power to stop the wind.

    I support you wholeheartedly!
You represent what Canada wants and needs.
We need a fair deal! We need sufficient adaptation funding for developing countries, we need legally binding emissions reductions targets, and we need our leaders, such as Stephen Harper and Jim Prentice, to stop embarrassing Canada, stop ignoring the rights of Indigenous Peoples, and start taking positive action on climate change!
thank you, and keep up the good work!

  205. 205 Stephen gray Dec 16th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

To the negotiator: you mobilized trillions this tear to bail out the banks. You proved the political will exists to come together and moblize resources to save the financial system. now, when the very future of our planet is a risk, you sit squabbling over who is to blame and who must pay while our planet burns around us. What could be more important than a new deal for the planet? Show us that you represent the wishes of the people Of the world. Show us more than money matters. Make a real commitment. realise Your actions now will echo in history

  206. 206 Natalie Diebolt Dec 16th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

As a nation that had more vigils on December 12th, 2009, per capita than any other nation; Harper should listen and heed to these voices that he is supposed to represent. Let it be known to the WORLD: The Agenda the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper is running is currently not the voice of the citizens he is representing.

[Directed to Mr. Stephen Harper] The average Canadian does not want another election Mr. Harper, but the average Canadian does not want to be misrepresented to the world either. There is a large quantity of Canadians who Will Want a resignation from you Mr. Harper if you do not represent the citizens of Canada at Copenhagen. There will be marches to Parliament, there will be outcries of injustice, there will be the citizens of your Nation that you will have to contend with, if you do not return from Copenhagen with A FAIR, AMBITIOUS, BINDING DEAL.

A Canadian Citizen That Wants To Be Properly Represented,
Natalie J. Diebolt of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada.

  207. 207 David Dec 16th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

Thank God someone is doing something! I am very proud of all of you young people who have decided that enough is enough. I had lost touch and lost hope that the talks in Copenhagen would amount to anything. As I looked at the pictures, and watched the videos I felt tears well up in my eyes. I felt a similar feeling like when we sat in the middle of the street to block the military industrial complex during the Vietnam War. Howard Zinn said it correctly, kings and queens don’t make history, the people do! Let’s get a real deal at Copenhagen! Thank you.

  208. 208 Allison Dec 16th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

All my love to all of you!!!

Some great wisdom from Joanna Macy:

“I want to share with you something that has been a tremendous inspiration to me. That is, broadening our view of time, and looking at this historical moment not as something we are trapped in and cannot see beyond, but as a time whose role we can appreciate.

“Lester Brown of the World Watch Institute talks about this as the time of the ecological revolution. He says it’s the third revolution of our species that we know about. The first was the agricultural revolution that took centuries. The second was the industrial revolution, and that took generations. The third, the ecological revolution, is the shift from the industrial growth society to a life-sustaining society. He says that the ecological revolution is born of necessity and driven by evolutionary pressure to bring into being a sustainable civilization. But, unlike the past revolutions of our species, this has to happen in just a few years. Not only that, it has to involve not just our technologies and institutions and the systems of production and distribution; it also has to involve our values and our perceptions who we think we are and how we experience our relationship to each other and to the world.

“I would like to talk about how this is happening and how we can take part in it and experience the great adventure of our time. Lester Brown calls it a revolution, but I like to imagine that future generations, even as close as the 2030s, 2040s, will look back on this time and call it “the great turning.”

“They’ll look back at us and say, “All those ancestors back then, bless them. They were involved in the great turning, and they didn’t know whether they would make it or not. At times it looked as if it was hopeless, futile. Their efforts seemed paltry, darkened by confusion, and yet they went ahead and they took part in it. And I’m imagining that they’ll look back with almost a kind of envy, seeing more clearly than we can now the high adventure that it represents, this great turning from a growth-addicted, unsustainable society to a stable, life-sustaining one.”

these days will be remembered. And i am so proud of the people taking a stand right now. The current state of World Politics is in shambles…Orwellian truths abound. We need a new vision, for what the future holds for us all. Thank you for being a part of this new vision. You are shaping it properly, and with peace and equality at the forefront. The world is watching, and you are inspiring us to act, and voice how we feel. Thank you for your Bravery and your Grace. We will be thinking of you tomorrow as the olympic torch plows through Toronto.

But if all the petition signing and campaigning does pay off, what will change (on a global scale)?

Will this one meeting between world leaders really be the answer to climate change? Will more regulations halt the rising temperatures? Are we, as young people, targetting the right people? Who can make this happen? The World leaders? In that case, why are we still running round turning all the lights off, in the hope that we can make a difference?

Can anyone tell me the action plan, if the world leaders do listen to us?

    Good luck with the campaign.

Today, Barack Obama sets off for the climate talks in Copenhagen. The talks hang in the balance, with a real risk they’ll end in failure.

There are still a few days left to turn things around, but for that to happen leaders like Obama need to raise their game. He won’t act unless we do – across the world people are piling on the pressure for Obama to act boldly for a strong and fair global deal.

Let’s make sure UK citizens add to that pressure: email Obama and the US ambassador in London now: http://www.38degrees.org.uk/obama-lead-copenhagen
