Van Jones Resigns as Special Advisor for Green Jobs at the Council on
Environmental Quality

WASHINGTON, DC – Van Jones, Special Advisor for Green Jobs at the
Council on Environmental Quality resigned today. Below is the text of
his resignation letter, sent to Chair Nancy Sutley:

“I am resigning my post at the Council on Environmental Quality,
effective today. On the eve of historic fights for health care and clean energy, opponents of reform have mounted a vicious smear campaign against me. They are using lies and distortions to distract and divide. I have been inundated with calls – from across the political spectrum – urging me to “stay and fight.” But I came here to fight for others, not for myself. I cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past. We need all hands on deck, fighting for the future. It has been a great honor to serve my country and my President in this capacity. I thank everyone who has offered support and encouragement. I am proud to have been able to make a contribution to the clean energy future. I will continue to do so, in the months and years ahead.”

We can fight back. Racism cannot be used as a political tactic, and companies cannot profit by advertising on a show that uses race-baiting as a tactic. We can do something about it. We’re not going to take this lying down.

If you stand with Van, then take action. Get your friends who’ve never even been activists before to take action on.

After the USAs Bush period we all have so much hope for the environment, resource depletion and climate change. We have similar problems here in the UK with commercial vested interests trying to wreck any progress to a more sustainable future.
This has to be opposed on all fronts local, regional, national and international.
My thoughts are with you in your fight, regardless of your professional stance please don’t give up personally there are many of us in this fight alongside you; even if we are an ocean apart..

    Hello,
I’m really not into the political arena at all, but could you explain to me how Van Jones resigning has anything to do with racism? Playing that racism card is really getting old.

I loaded up Fox news this morning and found a video that I published being used to hurt Van Jones, and cast doubt on Obama for choosing him. This makes me absolutely sick! I have my own political views, same as anyone, but to see a video that I spent countless hours crafting, used to smear a good man like Van Jones? This is the blackest of all political tactics.

Well, let’s see. I watch Glenn Beck, and I never once heard him refer to Van Jones’ race. What I did hear is that he claims we poison minorities, we intentionally spray toxins on migrants, he founded STORM, and the Ella Baker foundation. He supports a cop killer, and he calls himself a communist. He also signed the petition from the group that believes the government is responsible for the 9/11 attacks. He says he didn’t understand it, or doesn’t believe it, or didn’t read the petition, which either makes him a liar, or stupid. He is a Yale Law School grad for Gods’ sake, what law school grad signs ANYTHING without reading it, especially a petition. Any and all of those things should make him unqualified for service in the white house. You liberals are funny, all you want to do is just say “Fox News Lies” but you don’t back that up. Where is your support? Are any of the above things lies? Can you refute anything that I posted above? No, because in most cases there is video of Van Jones saying it, and in the others there is his signature, and his writings. The only ones in any of these debates that says anything about race is you liberals. I don’t care what color the man is, he was a self-defined communist. That is enough for me, the rest of it is just icing on the red cake.

Not all conservatives are racist, and using that defense just backfires on you. It makes you look ignorant, hateful, and little. We are never going to get over this stigma in our country until both sides stop using the race card, and from all the reading I do, and the stuff that I watch, and the sites I visit, it is always Liberals that use the words hate, and racist. It is starting to show where the real hate in this country lies.

As for you Morgan, you have no idea what you are talking about. I challenge you to find ONE racist thing on Glenn Beck’s show. Find one topic where he goes after someone because of his race. You know there are four other czar’s that Beck goes after, and they are all white. There are several politicians that he doesn’t like and most of them are white. In fact he has a problem with just about every single politician in office, and most of them are white. I challenge you to find it, and stop spewing what you read, because if you actually read his writing and watch his show you will find out that you have been lied to. I challenge you, find it or shut up and stop spreading your own brand of hate.

Left wing radicals are no different than the right wing radicals, both are extreme. Bush had a cabinet full of religious extremists, fundamentalists.

And whose to say attacks on government officials didn’t occur from within? The ANTHRAX scare to news offices 2001-2002 was done by a U.S. military officer. Timothy McVeigh, also a government worker.

The republicans are using this an excuse to again, incite more discord. Lets go back to the “holy” war in Iraq- which had NO weapons of mass destruction- and did contain oil. And the Republican parties, favorite female candidate for Vice President Mrs. Sarah Palin, who stated during her RNC speech- “we are at a war for ENERGY” – did she know something the rest of the public who were told Iraq was a mission from God, didn’t. The Repub’s just adored their princess who worked for the oil companies in Alaska- home of off-shore drilling.
An independent commission investigating the WTC? Thats funny- New Yorkers started that and live in New York- most of you were not here and seem to be the authority on New York- because Bush is not welcome in New York- and the WTC investigation, just post 9-11 was shut down and corrupted. Why is Bush hated in New York when he claimed to be “protecting” it with God?

Morgan, It’s not a race thing – if he was white, purple, or green he would still need to step down. Why always with the race card??

He signed a petition stating that our own government was to blame for the 9/11 attacks and that it’s all a conspiracy. Everyone has the right to their own opinions, but as a GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL, you need to trust in your government, and cannot be part of radical groups that plan to take the system down. I mean, the man stated himself that he’s a communist – wake up!

I guess the moral of the story is: Don’t mess with Glenn Beck.

About Matt

I'm currently a graduate student pursuing a Masters in Public Policy with a focus in environmental policy at the University of Maryland Public Policy Program. I'm have a Bachelors of Arts in Government and Politics from of the University of Maryland College Park. I blog largely about politics relating to energy, and the environment. I'm the former Campaign Director of UMD for Clean Energy at the University of Maryland, and am still a member. My undergraduate time in college was full of climate activism including pressuring my university to commit to and finalize a climate action plan, petitioning to get the University School System of Maryland to commit to carbon neutrality by 2050, helping pass one strongest pieces of statewide global warming legislation in the country, pressuring federal leaders to pass federal climate legislation, and leading a campaign to push a green platform in our local city council elections while mobilizing students to vote in large numbers for candidates that supported it. On top of that, I'm a big political junkie. Currently, I'm the Campaign Director for Prince Georges County Council candidate Mary Lehman. During my time as an undergraduate, I wrote bi-weekly opinion columns for our college paper The Diamondback on college, statewide, and Federal issues pertaining to energy and environment. This isn't all my life though, just like err...90% of it! I'm a long distance runner, I love watching sports, I play poker etc...but there won't be much in this blog about any of that.
