BREAKING: Top UN Scientist Endorses 350!

Here’s an exciting update from Bill McKibben and 350.org! Youth have played a key role in building support for 350: from chanting the numbers at Power Shift, to organizing summits around the world, and planning events for the 24 October 350 International Day of Climate Action. Thanks for your support and let’s keep this movement moving!

We’ve had many breakthroughs in the 350 campaign in the last 18 months, but maybe none as important as today.

Rajendra Pachauri, the U.N’s top climate scientist, said in an interview today that 350 was the bottom line for the planet.

Here’s the background–the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which Pachauri heads, is responsible for advising the world’s governments on climate change. The IPCC’s last report, which came out in the winter of 2007, didn’t actually set a target for CO2, but it was widely interpreted as backing a goal of 450 ppm CO2.

It was a number that many environmental groups, and many governments including the Obama administration, seized on as the best science. But that finding came before the Arctic melted, and before the world’s leading climate scientists started producing reports showing that 350 ppm was in fact the planet’s real threshold. Now Pachauri has given his imprimatur to that message.

Here’s his remarks, from an interview with Agence France Presse reporter Marlowe Hood:

“As chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) I cannot take a position because we do not make recommendations,” said Rajendra Pachauri when asked if he supported calls to keep atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations below 350 parts per million (ppm).

“But as a human being I am fully supportive of that goal. What is happening, and what is likely to happen, convinces me that the world must be really ambitious and very determined at moving toward a 350 target.”

Tree Sit Stops Blasting on Massey Mountaintop Removal Site in the Coal River Valley

Claim your stake in the future, come join the campaign to end mountaintop removal at Climate Ground Zero.

VIDEO UPDATE

AUDIO UPDATE Lunch Time Update from the Tree Sitters

ACTION UPDATE 2 PM- On the ground support has been arrested, cited for trespassing, and released. The tree sitters are secure.

ACTION UPDATE 4 PM- According to a confidential source, Massey had planned to blow up a knob near the tree sit today. But as long as we are in the trees, we stop Massey from sending yet another silica-laden dust cloud down upon the people of Pettry Bottom as they kill the mountain and watershed. COME ALL YOU TREE SITTERS!

ACTION UPDATE 8:30 PM – The sun is setting on the Coal River Valley and the tree sitters are still up. The tree sitters stopped a blast today. We’ll see what they do tomorrow.

ACTION UPDATE 7:00 AM – The sun is up and so are the tree sitters. Day two of standing in the way of the destruction of Appalachian mountains and communities begins!

Right now, two people are occupying two treetops at the edge of Massey Energy’s Edwight mountaintop removal site above Pettry Bottom and Peachtree in Raleigh County, West Virginia. At 6:30 a.m., concerned citizens unrolled two banners reading “Stop Mountain Top Removal” and “DEP – Don’t Expect Protection” from their treetop platforms. They are perched 80 feet above the ground, within 30 feet of the mine, and within the 300 feet of blasting.

Robert Samuelson’s Column is a Train Wreck

Cross-posted from: here

Some columns and rantings out there are so bad, there aren’t enough hours in the day to address all their crazy “facts” and the conclusions they draw from them. It’s probably important to say SOMETHING about Robert Samuelson’s Washington Post column, and let others pick up other pieces. After all, with the Transportation Reauthorization funding bill coming up soon, along with Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood’s vision for a high-speed rail system, it’s important the funds are there. 80 New Permits = 80 Fewer Mountains

cgz_f_img_7007Here’s another reason to sign the newly emerging Climate Pledge of Resistance.
Within the next month, the EPA may start approving more than 80 new mountaintop removal mining permits. In my mind, 80 new permits equals 80 mountains.

Early on in the Obama administration, we thought they were moving towards ending this practice which destroys mountains, poisons water and harms communities, but after pressure from the mining industry and various pro-coal politicians they signaled their retreat.  Now we could see an entire new round of destruction from these new permits. China Considering Greenhouse Emissions Cap?

A senior climate official from China, Su Wei of China’s National Development and Reform Commission, has reportedly stated that the country’s greenhouse emissions will be stabilized by 2050.  Meanwhile according to Reuters, a new “2050 China Energy and CO2 Emissions Report” drafted by major Chinese think tanks has stated that appropriate national policies could halt the growth of China’s emissions by 2030, with emissions growth beginning to slow as soon as 2020.  Reuters hails the 2050 Report as the latest of several “signs that Beijing has become more open to stronger steps against global warming” in the lead-up to Copenhagen.

I hardly need to comment on how huge a thing it is for China, now the world’s leading emitter of greenhouse gases, to be considering caps on global warming pollution.  Yet even if Chinese policy follows the recommendations of the 2050 Report, I have to confess that the thought of China’s emissions continuing their enormous rate of growth through 2020 sounds less than comforting.  I honestly don’t know what to think about this: on the one hand, it’s extremely encouraging that China is thinking about emissions reduction targets – the 2050 report suggests that the country could cut emissions to 2005 levels by the middle of this century.  On the other hand, I wonder if that’s enough to ward off catastrophic climate destabilization on a global level?  Obviously it will depend in part on what other countries do - especially the United States. Caught in Forged Letter Fraud, Dirty Coal Front Group ACCCE Throws their Astroturf Contractor Under the Bus

Originally posted at WattHead – Energy News and Commentary

An update on the story that just keeps on giving: the unfolding saga of the forged letters fraudulently sent by DC lobby firm Bonner and Associates on behalf of dirty coal interests in a deceitful attempt to kill Congressional clean energy and climate legislation.

In June, employees at Bonner and Associates, on a contract for the dirty coal front group, the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (subcontracted via the Hawthorne Group), sent letters to several Congressional offices fraudulently posing as black, Hispanic, women’s and senior citizen’s groups urging votes against the American Clean Energy and Security Act (the Waxman-Markey bill).

Now, Brad Johnson at the WonkRoom reports:

The American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) is dumping Bonner & Associates, the Astroturf firm that forged letters to Congress attacking clean energy legislation on its behalf. … ACCCE spokesman Joe Lucas told National Journal that his organization “did nothing wrong”:

We will not be working with Mr. Bonner again. ACCCE did nothing wrong. Looking back, there would be many things we would do differently.

In fact, ACCCE covered up the fraud and is now throwing Bonner under the bus. The coal coalition had been informed by the Hawthorn Group, its primary contractor, days before the pivotal House vote on the energy legislation. But ACCCE kept silent, failing to notify lawmakers or the defrauded organizations. ACCCE continues to employ the Hawthorn Group and the notorious voter-fraud company Lincoln Strategy Group.

Makes you wonder, what else is the dirty energy lobby up to…

UMD for Clean Energy Letter to Ben Cardin

Cross-posted from: here

The University of Maryland student activist group I am currently campaign director of is called UMD for Clean Energy. In the past year we’ve worked on getting thousands of Powervote pledges, collaborated with state environmental groups to pass a state global warming bill with the strongest short term greenhouse emissions target in the country, and our most recent accomplishments were organizing(with other groups) a 300 person clean energy Town Hall meeting for House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer(whose floor debate remarks are incredible), and bringing together students statewide to help turn Maryland Congressman Frank Kratovil’s swing vote on ACES into a yes vote. Our close proximity to DC gives us plenty of opportunities to lobby and have a strong presence on Federal legislation.

This past Tuesday, we delivered a letter to our Senator Ben Cardin’s office in a visit a couple of our members made to DC to meet with Cardin’s office as well as Senator Barbara Mikulski’s. The letter outlined what our group feels should be prioritized regarding improvements in the drafting of Senate legislation over the House climate bill . Although we know we have Ben Cardin’s vote, he is playing a important role on the Environment and Public Works Committee in drafting the Senate bill, and in marking it up. We would like to see the part of the bill that comes out of the EPW committee be as strong as possible, and feel that there can be improvements since the make up of the committee is fairly progressive and full of East and West coast Democrats whose states are not particularly coal dependent. Letter is below, and was signed by our elected officers. Continue reading ‘UMD for Clean Energy Letter to Ben Cardin’

Breaking: State Department Issues Permit for Alberta Tar Sands Pipeline

450,000 Barrels/day of Dirty, Climate Destroying Oil to Flow Into US

The decision sat on Clinton’s desk for months, and with a stroke of the pen, she could have denied this expansion of dirty energy infrastructure. But today, the State Department issued the permit, committing the US to more CO2 emissions from oil, and committing Canada to more destruction of indigenous lands and Boreal forest. We brought the Tar Sands Monster to Clinton’s doorstep, generated thousands of phone calls and emails, but Clinton failed to make the right decision.

From the State Department:

After considerable review and evaluation, on August 20, 2009, the Department issued a Presidential Permit to Enbridge Energy, Limited Partnership for the Alberta Clipper pipeline. Continue reading ‘Breaking: State Department Issues Permit for Alberta Tar Sands Pipeline’

Chevron Gets No Love From Andy Rooney

Chevron’s $27 billion Ecuador problem forces Andy Rooney to drop the H-bomb… something he really, really, hates to do.

I love Andy Rooney and he gets mad at a lot of things (like iphones or Ali G). But now he turns his anger at sleazy lawyers, sleazy journalists, and one of the world’s sleaziest corporations.

Andy Rooney should be livid! He doesn’t even go into Chevron’s dirtball tactics in Richmond CA, or the army they are deploying onto town hall meetings.

In May’s 60 Minutes segment “Amazon Crude”, Scott Pelley explored Chevron Texaco’s past operations in Ecuador and the toxic remains left behind. We were all outraged as footage ran of oozing oil pits left by Chevron, children swimming in Chevron’s polluted rivers, and families dealing with health problems – from cancers to miscarriages – caused by Chevron’s dirty operations. This is the reality faced by Amazonian communities in Ecuador that live in the wake of Chevron’s human rights catastrophe, a reality that Chevron disputes and refuses to account for.

Andy Rooney doesn’t like that….

ACTION: Build the Summer of Solutions

sosstlouisI know it’s summer (at least here in the Northern Hemisphere) and most folks aren’t in test-mode, but take a stab at these two multiple choice question.

The Summer of Solutions is:

A) An innovative youth leadership program empowering young people to make real change,
B) A launching ground for new projects to solve our climate, energy, economic, and justice crises,
C) A rockin’ good time,
D) A nation-wide effort looking for new leaders to help us grow as an organization, or
E) All of the above.

During 2009, Summer of Solutions has:

A) Empowered 125 young people to create solutions in 9 communities across the country,
B) Built awesome heating and energy efficiency, gardening, and listening projects from Eugene, OR to Worcester, MA,
C) Started incredible friendships, both with fellow participants and with community partners, that will endure long beyond this summer,
D) Supported ourselves, with grassroots fundraising and with a self-designed organizational structure, to run a completely youth-driven, youth-sustained project, or
E) All of the above.

I’m sure you’re shocked, but the right answer to both questions is E) All of the above! I’d like to draw your attention to option D) A nation-wide effort looking for new leaders to help us grow as an organization. Right now, Grand Aspirations (the organization that puts on Summer of Solutions) is looking to build its leadership team. We are relying on the innovation and energy of volunteers (like you!) to help Grand Aspirations into a solid, viable organization and to make Summer of Solutions 2010 a kick-ass, nation-wide, change-making program, bigger and better than in 2008 and 2009.

I’m going to throw another multiple choice question at you:
