James Hansen, Darryl Hannah, Former Congressman Arrested Protesting Mountaintop Removal

Hundreds of anti-mountaintop removal activists gathered today at the Marsh Fork Elementary in Sundial, WV, deep in the Appalachian mountains. Hundreds of pro-coal counter protesters also turned out, resulting in constant interruption of speakers and musical performers and culminating in charges of battery against a local woman who struck Goldman Environmental Prize winner Judy Bonds in the face.

Check out Climate Ground Zero for pictures and updates, Jeff Biggers always excellent article for more info.

14 arrested last week for taking direct action at the point of destruction when they climbed onto a massive coal scooping dragline. 31 arrested yesterday trying to enter onto a Massey property. the utility and mining industries must be freaking out (not to mention the politicians). we who use and organizing direct action are creating a space to take out sectors of the coal industry. now is the time for everyone to be stepping up. it’s time to escalate.

it’s pretty obvious you are a professional blogger hired by a coal front group or a mining company to stir up trouble. we run into folks like you all the time. but just fyi after being out at the action yesterday, i have seen firsthand the sort of hate you help stir up. you should be ashamed of yourself. also i appreciate the veiled threat on things in my personal life. it shows what sort of person you truly are.

Coal is right in the same seat that big tobacco gave up a few years back. From the health statistics I read, available to all, the burning of coal is harming far more people than tobacco ever did. Mountain Top Removal Coal Mining is also harming our water resources and destroying millions of years of natural order. This isn’t a matter of energy, this is a matter of greed.

By the end of the next decade mountaintop removal will have obliterated land the size a piece of Appalachia the size of Delaware. We can’t continue to stand back and watch as the coal Industry exterminates our world.

Everyone wants to go green and save the world, which is a wonderful thing. We have these protesters against mountain top removal, and somehow we can’t get this same kind of support for the homeless and people who desperately need medical care. Guess you can’t get on Television by helping the homeless or getting people the care they need so this is what everyone resorts too. Great hope you had a blast and one more thing don’t protest something in one state and live in another I am sure that your own state has problems of its own that needs to be addressed.
