I've been arrested 6 times for direct action (nonviolent civil disobedience) over the past decade, but this event was the most arresting of all such experiences, even though I, like the thousands of others blocking access to the Capitol power plant, was not restrained at all by the police on March 2, 2009. I'm a grandfather interested in passing along a sustainable future to my children and grandkids, along with the rest of humanity and all the other creatures who live on our precious planet. Let's keep the momentum created at D.C. rolling along!

Hey Josh! Thank you so much for posting this. The biggest bummer of missing Power Shift (for me) was missing out on this amazing action - HUGE love to everyone who made this happen. But I really appreciate your ability to critically reflect and articulate how direct actions - like this one and others - fit into our overall, much larger movement.

I think it's important to remember that any tactic can cut both ways if used irresponsibly: direct action can be alienating, both to people who don't understand why we're doing it and to communities who feel excluded. So while I'd love to see even more of it in pursuit of a coal-free future, I'm also inspired by your ability to stay one step ahead of complacency. Rock!

Thanks for the depth and nuance of this reflection Josh - I feel like this is an important addendum for folks to take home with them. Thank you also for all of the work you and others put into making this such a great movement building victory! I got delighted chills when reading that 2000+ were trained in NVDA and took on so many different roles - so inspired and impressed!
