Aaron writes: "I am wondering if there is anyway to reconcile this perceived (and it may just be perceived) conflict of idealogy, and move toward what JP was envisioning: a cohesive and comprehensive campaign and movement that embraces both sides of the coin?"

I indeed have witnessed the expression of this kind of unfortunate sentiment (between people preferring either mode of action) on this very blog at times past. Unfortunately, once the first "stones" are thrown by either party, the situation can sadly devolve quickly between parties who should consider themselves allies in common cause (if not common tactics).

In contrast to that, I'd say the words and sentiment of Matt's post here is an excellent counterpoint to those unfortunate episodes, evidencing a clear respect for the diversity of tactics available.

I think increased coordination of the message and desired ends of both "paper pushing" and "direct action" focused groups would also help cross this divide and ensure that the efforts achieve maximum synergies. For example, it's absolutely critical that the the message of the Capitol Coal Action is coordinate with the message being brought "inside the building" by the thousands of young people who will participate in Power Shift 2009's Lobby Day earlier on March 2nd. I know the organizers of both events are in communication already and I only encourage them to ensure both tactics are synergistic. Cheers,

I am in total agreement with the comments already stated but would like to throw something out there. As a proponent of awesome legislative/legal work and legitimate non violent direct action ( so, somewhat of an 'outside' observer) I find that at time these two separate parts of our movement are often at odds- often times each considering the other of a lesser status due to the road they take...to get to the same end.

I am wondering if there is anyway to reconcile this perceived (and it may just be perceived) conflict of idealogy, and move toward what JP was envisioning: a cohesive and comprehensive campaign and movement that embraces both sides of the coin?
much love

Great post Matt. I'm a coal organizer with the Sierra Club and I agree that the two methods are complimentary. The Sierra Club is much more than a "paper jammer" (we have a huge volunteer base turning out at rallies, hearings etc) and our coal campaign does indeed kick ass, but we don't engage in direct action. Well organized, non-violent direct action is key to raising the stakes and garnering the kind of media attention I think we're going to need. So long as the message is the same (solutions oriented, fossil fuel ending) I think a diversity of tactics is necessary.
