On Tuesday, America voted in one of the most critical elections of our nation’s history. As the energy around the elections subsides, climate and social justice advocates must set our sights on the next step: Bird-dogging Obama and Congress throughout the First 100 Days of his administration. In order to achieve the wide array of solutions that we need to stabilize the climate, re-imagine our economy, and invest in an inclusive, durable future for all Americans, Obama will need overwhelming grassroots support. Keep in mind that we are up against entrenched lobbyists that congresspeople can see every day.
On February 5th, 2009, The National Teach-In on Global Warming will engage over a million Americans in solutions-driven dialogue, adding thousands of new voices to the movement and educating our political leaders. We will all fight to place clean energy solutions to global warming at the top of the nation’s agenda, lift people out of poverty, and build a sustainable, inclusive economy. The Teach-In will focus national attention on what it really will take to stabilize the climate by drawing on some key recommendations from the Presidential Climate Action Project (PCAP):
1. Cut carbon 40% below today’s levels by 2020.
2. Create millions of Green Jobs: Weatherize, solarize and rewire the nation.
3. Revitalize America’s economy: Lead the world in renewable technology.
4. Promote carbon neutral power.
STUDENTS OF HISTORY know that successful movements join together to achieve a critical mass of people seeking a brighter future. Labor for Green Jobs, community and minority leaders for Environmental Justice, youth and students for a clean-energy future, faith leaders for stewardship of creation and care for fellow humans, the international community, and environmentalists concerned with long-term survival on Planet Earth—these are no longer disparate voices. We must partner to support the same lynch-pin set of solutions.
To this end, the National Teach-In is embedded at the beginning of President Obama’s First 100 Days: On February 5th, two weeks after the Inauguration and three weeks prior to Powershift 2009. It is our goal to also serve as a networking tool, bringing people together so that we may speak with one voice.
We need your help enlisting thousands of colleges, universities, high-schools, middle schools, faith groups, civic organizations and businesses. Help ignite the grassroots movement to impact the First 100 Days. Together, we will help set President Obama’s agenda.
The moment he steps into to the Oval Office for the first time, Obama must be ready to unite all Americans, inspiring us to rise to the challenges that we face. The incoming president must have a concrete legislative agenda: To act on global warming we must seize the opportunity to change our future. This year. 2009.
