Bill Nye: The Climate Guy

On Tuesday October 14th students at Penn State University were delighted to wait in a long line to see someone that many remembered from their younger days: Bill Nye the Science Guy. The event was held late in the evening, with Nye himself speaking at around 8:30 pm, but those suspenders and “crazy” inventions had students lining up around 6 pm. The Power Vote team took this as an opportunity to engage people around clean energy solutions and ask them to sign the pledge!

As the students filed into building, we passed out questions for students to ask Bill Nye generated from the Power Vote platform. We, of course, continued to collect more pledges270 to be exact! But everyone was growing restless for the familiar face and enthusiasm of Bill Nye.

And he did not let us down. The science guy was energetic, at times quite funny, but most important he was motivating. After discussing CO2 emissions and how the world is warming faster than ever expected, he told the students “This is climate change. You are now members of the climate generation.”

As his speech drew to a close Bill Nye excitedly proclaimed, “You can change the world!” Students cheered greatly in response to his confidence in the spirit of our generation. After he finished his talk, we were given the opportunity to ask him questions. When asked if he would support a moratorium on coal-fired power plants, Nye immediately said he absolutely would. Many students screamed in support.

He then took a question from a member of our Power Vote team, Tex Condreay. Bill Nye was asked if he would sign our pledge to vote for clean and just energy solutions. He verbally said that he would. However, due to the large number of questions he had left to answer he said he would further address the pledge after all the questions. Tex found him later at the reception and Bill Nye again stated he would be happy to sign our pledge. His assistant took Tex’s address to mail the completed pledge and we are eagerly awaiting it.

Most importantly, every person attending the event heard one of our childhood icons support a moratorium on coal and how he will be voting for clean and just energy solutions!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So like, this counts for 5,000 pledges right? Since he’s as cool as 5,000 people?

I’m a big BNTSG fan too. That’s why I was horrified to see him hosting the feature film at the (horrifying) Tar Sands Discovery Museaum in Ft. McMurray, Alberta. Bill? Duped into pushing oil addiction on school field trippers? Say it aint so! Sign the pledge!

I had a similar experience to Brant above – I was in Disneyland and there was this educational ride thing in which we were taken through a “tour of our natural resources” with Ellen and Bill Nye, and Bill was actually pushing Coal and Oil! Its good to see him fighting for good instead of evil here. :)
