September 27th Events to Focus on Key Presidential Debate Theme

[OAKLAND, CA] – On Saturday, September 27th, Green For All, 1Sky and the We Campaign are joining with tens of thousands of Americans for “Green Jobs Now: A Day to Build the New Economy.”

Green Jobs Now occurs on the day immediately following Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain’s first presidential debate. Energy security and the environment are sure to dominate the debate. Green Jobs Now will illustrate the solution to solve both crises.

The event is one of the largest days of citizen action focusing on economic issues and global warming in our nation’s history. People from all walks of life will stage hundreds of grassroots events throughout the country. They will demonstrate to the next President, to Congress, and to the nation that they are ready to build an inclusive green economy, strong enough to lift people out of poverty and secure our energy future.

“We can’t drill and burn our way to prosperity. We can and must invent and invest our way there,” said Van Jones, founder and president of Green For All. “September 27th will show the nation’s leaders that America is ready for a green-collar economy.”

“As we head into the final weeks of this national election and are in the midst of a national economic crisis, Americans are clear that they want bold action that builds a clean energy economy, unlocks the potential of sustainable industry, and ushers in a new era of prosperity and green jobs,” said Gillian Caldwell, 1Sky Campaign Director.

“The key to revitalizing our economy is to Repower America with 100% clean electricity in 10 years,” said Alliance for Climate Protection CEO Cathy Zoi. “An economy fueled by clean electricity will create millions of new green jobs that communities desperately need and harness energy efficiency that will save families and businesses money on their utility bills.”

Green Jobs Now will bring together diverse groups and individuals to urge our government to make an even greater investment in green jobs and clean energy. The events are spotlighting low-income communities and communities of color – two constituencies that are hardest hit by climate catastrophe, and have the most to gain from an inclusive green economy. Spotlight cities include Atlanta, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Oakland, and Coal River, WV.
