350.org and the Global Climate Movement

Many of you may have already heard about a new campaign that a few of us recently launched, 350.org. For those who have not, 350 is the most important important number on the planet. It represents the safe level of CO2 in the atmosphere, according to top NASA scientist Jim Hansen. If we stay above 350 for too long, we and our children are in for more frequent and intense storms, droughts, fires and floods like the ones we’re seeing in the Midwest right now.

But enough of the doom and gloom already! As youth, we all know that taking action and reaching dozens, hundreds or thousands of people is more important than verbal sparring. More than anything, what’s needed is coordinated action that includes everybody and calls for real action on climate. We need to step out of the box of “what is politically possible,” and show our organizing muscle. After all, we’re incredibly intelligent, savvy and powerful, and constitute roughly half of the world’s population.

So, from the same crew that brought you Step It Up last year, let me introduce 350.org, a new youth-led initiative to galvanize the world into action on climate. I’ll let this video without words…speak for itself:

Our goal is to take the number 350 and spread it everywhere, from city streets to small villages, from town greens to mountaintops, and everywhere in between. Communities all over the world have already begun to take action, but we need your help. Click here to organize an event in your community.

Once we have a critical mass of photos, videos and stories, we’ll help you and communities around the world to take them to Copenhagen next December, when world leaders will meet to hammer out a climate agreement. The next 18 months are our last chance to make sure we let them know that we’re serious about climate, and need the debate to reflect what science and justice demand.

That video is beautiful. If anyone can pull this off it will be you folks. I like the humble, “this has never been tried before” approach and the open arms to any and all ideas. Best of luck and I can’t wait to spread the number.

Great video! Congratulations on the launch!

I’d love to help you pull together 350 actions at Bank of America and Citi locations, the biggest funders of coal powered climate change. Just let me know. You know where I live.

    peace, Scott
