I Cut Bank of America

“Now bringing you The New Coal Rush, made possible in part by Bank of America.”

There are two things we can do to make coal a bad investment. Diminish the brand value of investors, and divest. I’m working with ReEnergize Texas to do a little bit of both. This is the first in a series of videos that will be hitting YouTube before the summer.

Right now I don’t have the resources to make this a national action. But the divestment strategy will only be effective if Bank of America knows we’re doing it and knows why. They are in a fight with their competitors for our attention because we’re young, and a life-long bank account is worth a lot of money.

Bank of America knows exactly how much profit it can expect to make off one bank account held by a 20-something college-educated person. That number is exponentially higher than the amount of money you have in your bank account today. This is because they lend your money out and earn interest, because they plan on your account growing as you “move up in the world,” and because they hope you will establish a relationship with them that will include future loans, investments, etc.

If we can demonstrate that they are losing money by losing accounts, they will have to begin comparing that loss, not to the profit they make on coal, but rather to the profit they make on coal ABOVE the profit they could make on other investments including renewables.

So cut Bank of America today. But most importantly, document it (i.e. video or photo) and let’s track it through RAN or whoever wants to host it.

Great video (and welcome to IGHIH contributors team)! This is a great example of how to send a clear message (contrasted with this one!). If I were a Bank of America customer, I’d follow suit and film my own video.

Keep the good posts and videos coming.

(p.s. post a profile when you get a chance, so we get a sense of who you are)

    Richard,

Really glad to hear your considering it! I’ve been trying to get Public Citizen to establish a divestment campaign, and we’re close, but there have been some communication problems between Texas and DC that are slowing things down. We’ll get it though… stay in touch.
