Great article! We have to modify it to US needs. Any such statement, as Cascadia Brian noted, must include discussions on the corporate greenwashing and teaching people the valid responses against their tactics and marketing strategies. The nuclear angle must be addressed as it is not a solution to climate change. Like peak oil and coal, uranium mining, has limits where it increases the price that consumers have to pay for electricity as the easily exploitable uranium deposits exhausted---it will further dependency on a non-sustainable resource with enormous costs in health effects and rising utility rate enslavement for the consumer.

Solar and wind energy are the only realistic alternatives to the energy crises. Comparing nuclear energy, clean coal and agrofuels to renewables is like comparing apples to oranges. An accident at a solar or wind plant is not as dangerous as an accident at a nuclear plant. A tornado will tear to pieces a wind farm, that is all; a tornado hitting a nuclear plant will poison all forever.

NO NUKES
NO COAL
NO MORE LIES

hello all

a very good point about clean coal, not sure why its not in there (have to admit not picking up on it till now). However, this issue came up a lot during the conference, with resounding opposition to the idea.
Since then some 'green' groups in Australia have come out and promoted the idea:

very sad indeed...

I did not actually attend the conference but the talks which have been posted on Youtube (see the link above to Foster's and the conference website for Patrick Bond and others) do discuss the myriad problems with "solutions" you mention (favorites of climate "heros" like Thomas Friedman)- which we see are more about new ways to profit and show little or a negative effect on climate.

I can't think of any reason they aren't mentioned except that they are seen as implied by, for example, the items under article 8.

Reading over the responses to the Friedman pie post, I think the issues in this statement (again particularly in article 11)are very relevant topics of discussion here.

This is really great...but I'm very suprised (considering some of the signatories have written extensively on the topics!) that there is no mention of the dangers of clean coal, carbon offsets, nuclear power, agrofuels, etc...

Was there a reason for that?
