Why spend your spring break on the beach when you could spend it challenging oppressive power structures, changing the national conversation on coal and taking action against dirty coal?
Every day coal companies take diesel fuel and fertilizer–the same used in the Oklahoma City bombing –and blow up another chunk of heritage, headwater stream, hardwood and geology and heart. It happens to mountains across Appalachia and to fertile farmland in Ohio. Stand against this home grown terrorism. Stand with coalfield residents. Stand up and take action for justice, for clean energy and against global warming.
Are you with us? Come to Mountain Justice Spring Break the first and last week of March! Better yet, help plan it! MJSB is planned by a youth collective and we need you! Grab our Media Toolkit to start promoting in your community. To see scenes from last year’s spring break and learn about Mountain Justice Summer, check out this 3 minute video.
This year we will have two locations:
March 1-9 we will meet at beautiful Camp Ahistadi, close to the Mt. Rogers National Recreation area, Grayson Highlands and the Virginia Creeper trail in southwest Virginia, close to the Tennessee line. This area is home to the highest mountains in Virginia, wild ponies, dense forests and spectacular mountain views. Southwest Virginia is also home to mountaintop removal in nearby counties, as well as a huge proposed coal-fired power plant in Wise County.
March 22-30 we will be in the scenic rolling hills of southwest Ohio, near Athens, at a fantastic intentional community called Wisteria. We will meet with local Meigs County residents fighting new proposals for gigantic surface mines and coal-fired power plants, eat healthy food, organize, learn and strategize to stop mountaintop removal and power plants.
Cost for Mountain Justice Spring Break is extremely modest, and includes all workshops, camping, food and entertainment. To register, or for more information, go to:
