Senate blocks vote on House Energy bill

this just in, the Senate did not have the 60 votes needed to get a vote on the floor of the senate on the Energy Bill. Over the next few days — they will work through the weekend — Senators are moving to gut the House Energy Bill, and it’s likely that the Renewable Energy Standard will either be removed or weakened and the long term tax package may go, too, to earn the votes of at least 7 more Senators. Then the Senate will officially vote on an amended version of the energy bill early next week most likely Tuesday.
We need to keep the pressure on, and hopefully we can save the good elements of the bill. Looks like only one Southern Senator, Senator Nelson of Florida voted for a vote :( , or two if you count Virginia’s Senator Webb in the South  Find out how your Senators voted here.

It’s frustrating, but the pressure has to remain. Tomorrow’s international day of climate action should focus on the Senate (for those in the US). This bill has to pass with all the provisions for renewables the House had.

This sucks! One good thing: our Senator Norm Coleman, who just a month ago at Power Shift brushed us off, was one of the only Republicans to vote in favor of the bill!!!

wow, that’s great news Laura! we’re working to turn around some of our Southern senators, so hopefully we’ll have more stories like this soon!

We need to call our senators who have voted against this bill and let them know that they can’t compromise on our future! I’ll be calling Sen Martinez and letting him know that Fl youth support strong action on climate change. Lets flood their offices with calls
