I heard about the China Youth Action Network activities on the TV current affairs/news yesterday (16 Jul 09 Australia). A CYAN representative was interviewed.

The CYAN initiatives sound really great! Involving as many people as possible in changing to a green renewable energy economy is the most powerful means of change. People seeking their own green solutions while negotiating with businesses and government to reduce emissions and create other green solutions will in due course achieve dramatic changes to the Chinese economy!

Keep up the good work CYAN

Thanks for the link, Jesse. And stay tuned, we are going to be featuring a piece from a Chinese student group going to Bali very soon.
A Chinese student at Tsinghua University and American Fulbright scholar to China, Shane and John Romankiewicz, have created a really awesome podcast series on Chinese environmental action. So far, they have two podcasts up at http://chinasgreenbeat.typepad.com/

They're focusing on the solutions that China is using to address environmental degradation, and have done a wonderful job looking at waste disposal and solar water heating so far. I'm really looking forward to more of their podcasts, and hope that they'll highlight on student action, too.

Thanks for posting this interesting article, Jesse. It's hopeful to see this happening.

It is, of course, important to be clear-eyed about the scale of the problem in China. It's always important to have hope that a social movement in China could stop their 500 or so coal plants planned for construction. But it seems very unlikely given how suppressive the Chinese government is and how high economic growth is among China's priorities.

It seems to us that China is the prime example of why massive and strategic public investments in the U.S. (and a joint research collaboration with China) to bring down the real price of clean energy (including CCS) should be a top goal for the U.S. climate movement.

Must read on China, coal, and CCS: http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2007/11/21/103546/27

Latest installment in NYT's "Choking on Growth" describes the difficulties of energy conservation in China: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/24/world/asia/24evaders.html
