Here we go!

This weekend—the culmination of StepItUp, the glory of Power Shift, the launch of 1Sky—will be the most exciting and important few days in the history of the American fight for action against global warming! If there has ever been a time to push hard, it’s right now. There are lots of way you can help – We’re in the final push for Step It Up right now and gaining momentum:

  • over 10,000 invitations have been sent to Congress to address the 1 Sky priorities and attend an event;
  • dozens of members of Congress have committed to participate including candidates Obama (watch his Step It Up video!), Clinton, Edwards, McCain, Kucinich;
  • events are still being signed up from coast to coast;
  • and, we’re set up on our end to get photos into the hands of the thousands of Power Shift students for the lobby day on Monday

All of this has been possible thanks to the thousands of people who are supporting this open-source campaign, including many of you reading this blog – thank you! If we can bug you one final time before Step It Up culminates on Nov. 3, here’s what we could use:

  • Invite members of Congress to events: If you feel you have a Congressional ear, please pass on our invitation to take part in an event (they’re everywhere) or offer a statement of support.
  • Help spread the word: There are great events in every state now (thanks North Dakota!): please encourage your members/friends to attend events and spread the word. If people are into digital action – we’d love to keep our invitation counter growing.
  • Join or Start an event: Find an event near you and join up – if you’re going to be at Power Shift 07, we’re doing a big Step It Up event on Saturday night to culminate the day – or, if there isn’t an event, sign one up: all it takes is a few friends and a digital camera. Good luck!

Thank you so much – for a little extra motivation, take a look at the slide-show from last April 14 . Without seeing these pictures, it’s really impossible to understand Step It Up and the effort our volunteer organizers are putting in around the country. There’s a movement out there if we’re willing to see it.

Thanks again!

About Jamie

Jamie is the co-coordinator of 350.org, an international global warming campaign. A recent college graduate, he lives in San Francisco, CA. In 2007, he co-organized Step It Up, a campaign that pulled together over 2,000 climate rallies across the United States to push for strong climate action at the federal level. He's also an early member of the youth climate movement, leading one of Energy Action's first campaigns in 2005: Road to Detroit, a nationwide veggie-oil bus tour to promote sustainable transportation. He's traveled to Montreal and Bali to lobby the UN with youth, but he's a strong believer that change happens in the streets not in meetings. Jamie received the Morris K. Udall award in 2007 and has been recognized by the mighty state of Vermont for his work on climate change. You can also find him blogging at Campus Progress' "Pushback," Changents.com, and 350.org.
