Dispatches from the Youth Climate Movement
Thanks for the video! A a west coaster, I feel more connected now …
It’s inspiring to see and hear movements locking down together, across the country.
It’s happening in D.C. It’s happening in Detroit. It’s happening in LA. Right now.
Peace and climate activists are in the streets and getting arrested to demand an end to wars for oil and a start for global warming solutions. 59 people were arrested this morning on Capitol Hill. 2 people were arrested in Detroit and 40-50 folks crowded intersection corners in LA –both at Toyota auto-dealers. All in the name of No War No Warming.

And here’s more info from LA and Detroit, where Global Exchangers are organizing:
DETROIT — Climate change activists, students and the Freedom From Oil Campaign unfurled a dramatic 15-foot banner on the Rinke Toyota dealership in Centerline, Mich. today. The group accused Toyota of “driving war and warming” and challenged mega-dealer Penske Automotive Group to demand that its suppliers – like Toyota – improve their fleetwide fuel economy and reduce global warming pollution.
The banner was draped from Rinke Toyota for 20 minutes before police removed it and arrested two of the activists for trespassing. With more than 300 dealerships and hundreds of maintenance and service outlets, Penske Auto Group is a mainstay of the automobile industry.
LOS ANGELES – 40-50 Activists and citizens rallied outside a Toyota dealership in Santa Monica with a giant balloon banner reading: “Toyota: driving global warming one lawsuit at a time,” with several ultra-fuel-efficient plug-in electric hybrid vehicles.
Toyota is currently fighting the state’s efforts to implement the Pavley Law, AB 1493, legislation that would promote higher fuel economy and prevent climate change. California is one of several states trying to curb global warming through strict regulation of tailpipe pollution, but the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM), which lobbies on behalf of major auto companies including Toyota, Ford and GM, is fighting such efforts by suing states that attempt to pass pollution regulations. This is a big deal especially in the Central Valley where air pollution causes skyrocketing asthma rates.
No War No Warming is a coalition that wants to:
STOP the war in Iraq and future resource wars by ending our addiction to fossil fuels.
SHIFT government funding to rebuild New Orleans and all communities suffering from racism and corporate greed.
GO green and promote environmental justice with new jobs in a clean energy economy.
