New Jersey Set To Follow California’s Steps

On May 21st,¬†citizens from state environmental groups¬†who participated in the New Jersey Climate March (April 13-16)¬†descended on Trenton to push for passage of the Global Warming Response Act, ground-breaking legislation that would bring the state’s global warming pollution back to 1990 levels by 2020.

After the lobby day, there was a majority in the state assembly (47 co-sponsors), with 9 other members who were likely to co-sponsor the bill. In the senate, there are 18 co-sponsors, with 4 that are likely to co-sponsor the bill. This means that we have a majority both in the assembly and in the senate in support of this bill.

This Thursday, a vote will likely pass the bill through the Environment Committee, and then the goal is to move it to the Telecommunications Committee and to get it approved there. After that, there is the intention of attaching the 80% by 2050 goal to the bill before it goes to a floor vote in June. If all this plays out as expected, this June the legislature will vote for passage of this important bill, setting New Jersey as the second state to have a legally-binding 80% by 2050 goal. Go Jersey!

Stay tuned for more.

    Carlos,

Just wanted to give you and your folks in NJ mad props for getting this on the docket in the state legislature. I’m also from New Jersey, so I guess I can share in the Jersey pride. Onwards and upwards to bigger things for the Garden State!
