Welcome to Climate Week! Photos, media clips, and stories are starting to trickle in from places Austin, TX, San Luis Obispo, CA, Boston, MA, St. Mary’s City, MD, and Valdosta, GA. With actions being planned on 578 campuses across the United States and Canada this week, we know this is just the tip of the melt-resistant iceberg. Pass any scoops you hear about Week of Action happenings to josh@energyaction.net or post them yourself here. Check out three inspiring stories from Day 1:
Monday, Austin, TX: “Photo of Alpha Phi sorority at the University of Texas. We have approximately 180 members, and we are excited to help cut carbon! We wanted to show that it’s not just hippies who care about global warming! We all care!!”
Update from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student, Tylor Middlestadt with the Empower Poly Coalition
Monday, San Luis Obispo, CA: On Monday night, Cal Poly’s Student Life & Leadership Department sponsored a viewing of An Inconvenient Truth to an audience of nearly 300 students and community members. Following the movie, representatives from several clubs and organizations working towards a sustainable future gave brief presentations to the remaining crowd about what they were doing to be a part of the solution. The Empower Poly Coalition is teaming up with Cal Poly’s student government and student affairs division to bring the climate message to Cal Poly. On Wednesday Associated Students, Inc. student government will launch CP NEXT: Generation Sustain, a two day event focusing on building community around positive change. The program features Andy Revking-NY Times Science Reporter, a Strategic Energy Alliance panel discussion, slam poetry from Soulspeak and a 3-hr club fair to help spread the word and get more students involved.
To be sure and capture the moment, Empower Poly will be tabling at every event and interviewing passerby students about their reactions to climate change and what they think should be done. We’ll be taking lots of pictures for the photo petition and having a call-in day to all of our lawmakers, local to national, to let them know that we want global warming to be addressed in our community. Update from Northeastern University student, Jennifer Wolfson with Husky Energy Action Team
Northeastern students saturated the campus with fliers on Monday, and staffed a table in the student center where we nabbed passerby to tell them about our Action Week events and to take their pictures with our “Congress: STEP IT UP! Reduce Carbon 80% by 2050″ posters. We also gave class raps in five classes of over 100 students each–the first class raps any of us have ever done. Fun! We got a final cosponsor on board (bringing our total up to 15), and, in a 35 person meeting, previewed the video we made about NU students working on global warming. We also sent paper invites to 40 key admin/facilities/professor types, just so they know we know their names. Just kidding–we really want them to come to our events. Good luck everybody!!!
