Turn out the lights !

On February 1st 2007, there is a world wide action against Climate Change ! It is organized by the Alliance pour la planète, a French-based umbrella organization of several environmental associations. All you have to do is turn out all your lights for 5 minutes, February 1st, between 7:55pm an 8:00pm. This action is basically destined to attract media attention, as well as to create awareness amongst the population and the decision makers. The idea is to show political leaders and candidates that Climate Change is an issue which is on the forefront of citizens concerns for 2007.

Why February 1st? On that day, the United Nations will publish their new report on Climate Change. So here`s our chance to show the world what we think. Let`s make it BIG! Please distribute this information widely.

I had no idea of this inititive, and shutting down lights all across campus on this short notice is out of the question, but we have a good alternative: About 15 Minnesota colleges will be launching Campus Wars, a month-long state-wide college energy-saving competition, on February first. We’ve spent the last several months prepping student teams, getting campus president’s on board, and planning for power down.

    So, in solidarity …

Well, this is going to tick of the power companies as many lines will burn out.
Turning on or off big juice suckers usually creates spikes and many spikes at once create burnouts in otherwise stable transformer boxes and blocks.
I willl participate in this, but I would not be surprized if power companies were behind this - after all, they do get government funding for fixing the power networks…

I also wonder how much ozone this will create worldwide (as we know ozone is created with electrical malfunctions and shorts). The ozone created like this - unfortunately - does not travel into the atmosphere to close the ozone holes, but rather stays down here and is not considered too healthy. And neither are the Nx compounds generated in this way.
