So, tonight’s a big night for me… I’ll be giving a speech to about 650 people at a benefit for the Canadian Youth Climate Coalition. It’s an amazing concert here in Montreal, organized by a group called PoP Montreal, which does music and activism stuff. Montreal is a pretty active, pretty progressive and fairly political city, being both one of the biggest college towns in North America (5 big universities + more than 10 colleges) and one of the very cheapest. Something we don’t talk a lot about in the global warming circles, save for our EJ talks, is the connection between affluence, oppression and climate change. For me, if I couldn’t afford to go to school and live, I couldn’t spend time doing the work of advocacy and outreach. This is how it breaks down: average tuition in quebec for a year = ~$2000, my apartment monthly rent incl. all bills = $300, food = ~$50/week… my income is usually around $1200 a month, part time, making this all possible. I Know that ain’t the situation in many places.
Anyhow, the show is going to be kickass, with a stellar lineup: Sam Roberts, The Stars, Jorane, The Adam Brown, and more… over 4 hours of incredible music for $10. POP Montreal rocks! I’m still not 100% sure what I’ll be saying in my speech… so if you’ve got ideas before 7pm tonight, send them my way! And check out www.ourclimate.ca for more about the CYCC.

Hey brother,
were do you spend the remaining 700$/month!
Wine, cheese, maple syrup and other stereotypical Québecois things?
hehehe.
I wouldn’t be in university if it wasn’t for the Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation! They give me money every year to pay for tuition and books. I scrounge the rest from part time work and summer jobs. Good thing us Canadians have 4 months off in the summer - I don’t know what I’d do if I only had 2 months like our neighboUrs to the south. That’s right neighbours with a U.
How come you only pay 2,000 for tuition? I thought out of provincers had to pay more…

the rest goes to being an activist, of course! no, in fact it goes to travelling and supporting myself when i ain’t getting paid, which is too often. i’ve always thought Energy Action should create a massive pool of funds to distribute for people to get salaries for the tonnes of work they do… tuition is only $2000 for quebec residents… yep, i’ve made Quebec my home, on a more permanent basis. what can i say? vive le quebec!
