A Florida power company is trying to construct a huge 1200 MW new coal plant in Southern Georgia to provide electricity to Florida, but Florida students are joining a Georgia student call-in day to their Governor today to stop this plant. Floridians are saying: “Hi Georgia. This is Florida. No thanks on the power plant. We don’t want to pollute your communities and everyone’s planet for our electricity.”
Join in solidarity with Georgia and Florida students in their calls to Governor Purdue today before a public hearing tonight at 404.656.1776 You don’t have to be a student or even a youth to be affected by this, so all are encouraged to join the call-in day! Read on for talking points and info on the plant.
More on the effects of this proposed plants: coal mining is a super destructive process that is devasting communities and ecosystems around Appalachia and the world, we all share the same air that will be polluted by the plant, and we’ll all feel the affects (although some will be hit much harder than others) of the global warming that it will cause. Let’s encourage Georgia to “mine” energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities before even considering new dirty coal facilities!
A little background on the plant: On September 12th EPD issued a draft air permit for LS Power. Many of the pollution limits exceed what similar size plants in other states are actually emitting. In one case the pollution limit is even higher than LS Power asked for. At 1200 MW, if this plant goes on-line as proposed it would dwarf any state’s plan to address global warming. It is one of the largest proposal in the country and will emit 10-15 million tons of carbon dioxide annually for the life of the plant. Here’s an Atlanta Journal Constitution article with more background on the plant.

Great work GA and FL students!
We are doing the same thing in Kansas! They want to build 3 new coal fired power plants in the state. Annually, that’s 14 million more tons of carbon in our air. Also, the plants will use 9.8 billion gallons of Kansas water. And, like in GA, 92% of the power is going to other states. No thanks!
Kansas is third in the nation for wind energy potential. Keep Kansas clean!
We are holding a large screening of “An Inconvenient Truth” and organizing students for the public hearing next week. Any other ideas on successful tactics?
