Just minutes ago, world-renowned NY Times reporter Andrew Revkin reported in his blog that he was attacked by Senator James Inhofe on the floor of the US Senate. Hear the speech now.
His crime? Attempting to educate children. Frustrated with lack of response from “his generation” Andrew Revkin set out several years ago to write an environmental book children could understand. The result was “The North Pole Was Here,” part autobiography of his travels, part narrative on the forces that influence the ever-shifting climate of the North Pole.
Revkin’s account of the history, the conditions, and the fragile future of the far reaches of this planet come from his own visits over the last several years. True to his style, Revkin reserves major judgments, choosing to share facts and photos of the shifting conditions of the North Pole, allowing the reader to make his own conclusions. Revkin is no stranger to attacks from the far-right. Most recently, he broke the story about a Bush-appointee (and undergrad drop-out) George Deutsch’s effort to stifle climate science emerging from NASA’s James Hansen. However, we at Energy Action are most proud to have shared the brunt of an attack from climate skeptics almost 1 year ago after Mr. Revkin wrote a story on the youth at the most recent climate conference in Montreal.
Of course, those attacks were funny. This attack from Senator Inhofe is plain pathetic, the final ramblings of a man whose views and office are long overdue for review.
Andrew Revkin is perhaps the most respected climate reporter in the world. For over 10 years he has reported on global warming as a science writer for the NY Times. Through his tenure his reporting has remained factual and unbiased, and he has received many awards from the quality and meticulous detail of his reporting.
Most ironic for Senator Inhofe is that the title DOES NOT refer to global warming at all, but rather the fact the the shifting land mass of the polar region mean that what may be marked as the actually the North Pole one moment may be miles away in days.
Truth be told, we wouldn’t mind if Mr. Revkin wouldn’t take the hard line more often and unleash the climate activist we know is inside. However, that he maintains his reporters integrity makes Inhofe’s attacks all the more ironic. If you want to vent some steem, tell Senator Inhore that his hot air is the biggest threat to our climate, and democracy.
