Youth Cheer/Dance/Shake It for the Truth

As a crew of us Sierra Youth Coalition members from
across the country came together for a weekend-long sustainability conference in Ottawa, Ontario, we figured we might as well do some radical cheerleading while in our beautiful country’s capital!

Sunday night, clad in red, white and black, about a dozen of us cheered climate cheers outside a movie theatre showing Al Gore’s new climate crisis film: An Inconvenient Truth. We gave it our all encouraging people to take action, had people behind a “Truth Booth” and others passing out flyers (Top 10 ways to take action on climate change) and selling our youth action guides!

It was the perfect way to end the weekend – high energy and fun, and people stopped in the streets to join the good times! Check out our press release below, and give this a go in your own town!

Truthful & Youthful: Youth Encourage Movie-Goers to Take Action on Climate Change

(Ottawa) – Last night outside the Bytown Theatre in downtown Ottawa, a group of about a dozen youth from the Sierra Youth Coalition brought high-energy, choreographed cheers to movie-goers leaving a screening of of Al Gore’s new film “An InconvenientTruth”.

“The new Conservative government has slashed climate funding and walked away fromCanada’s international obligations”, said Meredith James from Edmonton AB. “In return,Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Environment Minister Rona Ambrose have offered Canadians no viable options for dealing with the pressing global environmental problemof climate change and have reneged on Canada’s international commitments under Kyoto”.
Youth came together in Ottawa from across Canada for meetings and action on climateissues in Canada. In bright costumes the youth cheered for climate solutions anddanced to raise awareness about what Canadians can do to address climate change. Singing “Ooooh, its getting hot in here/ There’s too much carbon in the atmosphere”, the “Climate change is a critical global issue,” said Zoë Caron from Halifax NS. “We puttogether an action guide with great ideas from across North America about how we cantake action on climate change in our own communities. The guide can be downloaded at our website at www.syc-cjs.org/sustainable.”

Youth are a key component of the climate change movement. “We are excited to be able to bring Canadians a positive message from a fresh perspective,” said Ben Powles fromOttawa.

I wanted to share our cheers with y’all in case you wanted to do them at a community theatre near you!

We did 3 cheers in rotation… it was more fun for us and kept the audience engaged.

IT’S GETTING HOT IN HERE (the cheer)
(This one has actions and stuff… but go ahead and make it up if you don’t know ‘em)
    Oooooooooooooo it’s hot in here
There’s too much carbon in the atmosphere
I said ooooooooooooo it’s hot in here
There’s too much carbon in the atmosphere

    Take action! Take action!
    And get some satisfaction
    Take action! Take action!
    And get some satisfaction
    (Repeat)

    INCONVENIENT TRUTH
(This one is a repeat-after-me style in the rhythm of “I don’t know but I’ve been told”)
(NOTE: we had a “truth booth” with flyers and action guides where folks could learn what they can do to take action on climate change… this cheer was created with that in mind)

There is an inconvenient truth (repeat)
‘Bout climate change, there’s so much proof (repeat)
Oil heats our world as it goes ’round (repeat)
And now it’s time to hit the ground (repeat)

    The truth! The truth!
The truth is in the booth!
    The truth! The truth!
The truth is in the booth!

    OR
    Take action! Take action!
    And get some satisfaction
    Take action! Take action!
    And get some satisfaction
(Then we’d bridge into It’s Getting Hot in Here)

    THE EARTH IS ON FIRE
(This is a jam of the Blood Hound Gang’s “The Roof is on Fire”)
(Note: Stephen Harper is the Conservative Prime Minister of Canada who has slashed and frozen all climate change funding in the last 2 months)
    The earth
    The earth
    The earth is on fiiiiiiiiiire
Hey Stephen Harper gotta save our mother now!
    (Repeat)
