Juan Hoffmaister delivered this powerful statement at the 9th Governing Council Special Session of the United Nations Environment Programme. Juan complied input from a number of individuals and youth organizations, including, the UNCSD youth caucus and the Youth Environmental Network of Canada.
The statement is consistent with the International Youth Summit Declaration that was collaboratively drafted in December for the UN climate negotiations. It urges governments to stop unfair subsidization of the fossil fuel industry, encourages the development of diverse energy portfolios, demands developed countries to properly fund the administrative expenses of the Executive Board of the CDM. The statement recommends that governments promote transparency, informed consent, and equitable benefit sharing with Indigenous Peoples and other affected stakeholders by including input from the civil society, traditional knowledge and affected communities. The statement also pushes for a just transition!
I think that this statement at the Special Session of the UNEP is a perfect example of increasing youth participation in decision-making thus initiating innovative
political action.

GO JUAN PA & the team for writing this statement!
Way to go JuanPa! and the gang! We are so proud of him in SustainUS.
